Berdych Outlasts Montanes in Seesaw Match
Tomas Berdych, the No. 9 seed, began the second day of first-round action by surviving an upset by Barcelona resident Albert Montanes.
Montanes took the early lead on Center Court and seemed perched for victory - up a set and a break in the second set - before the Czech battled his way back into the match.
Berdych took two late breaks in the second set and quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third, but Montanes surmounted a comeback of his own. The 25-year-old took two consecutive breaks, and only needed to hold serve to clinch the win, but Berdych responded in kind.
Montanes double-faulted to give Berdych match point, and then sailed a cross-court shot wide to give him the victory.
The 20-year-old Berdych, who won his last title at the BNP Paribas Masters, will face another Spaniard, Albert Portas, in his second round match.
Also in early action Tuesday, two Italians produced convincing victories: Filippo Volandri defeated countryman Andrea Stoppini 6-3, 6-1, while Potito Starace needed only 58 minutes to record the 6-4, 6-2 victory over Czech Lukas Dlouhy. Argentine Agustin Calleri turned in another quick win, taking less than an hour to oust American Justin Gimelstob.
Meanwhile, Spaniard Alberto Martin topped wild card compatriot Bartolome Salva-Vidal 6-4, 6-2. He next faces Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2001 event champion who is looking to reach his fourth Barcelona final. Fernando Verdasco also enters an all-Spanish battle and will take on wild card Carlos Cuadrado in the second round.
Ivo Karlovic and Fernando Vicente became the final players to advance to the second round, defeating Max Mirnyi and Alex Calatrava, respectively.
