Ljubicic delivers first point for Croatia
Ivan Ljubicic has defeated Karol Kucera, a late replacement for the injured Karol Beck, 63 64 63 in one minute under two hours, to send Croatia 1-0 up against the Slovak Republic in the Final of the 2005 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.
A delighted Ljubicic, who was rarely troubled in this rubber, leapt off the ground and punched the air in delight after flashing a crosscourt backhand pass past a demoralised Kucera on his second match point.
Ljubicic is now the first man to win ten live Davis Cup rubbers in a year, and is still on course to equal John McEnroe's 1982 record of twelve winning rubbers.
The Slovak Republic must now hope that its No. 1, Dominik Hrbaty, can level the tie overnight by defeating Mario Ancic in the second rubber.
