Re: $50K San Antonio

Frank and Simon man. What the heck? It is disappointing... Better luck next time to them both.

Is Simon still going to play in doubles? Was he very injured?

Challenger champ tops foe, back pain

Battling a nagging back injury throughout the match, Dmitry Tursunov overpowered Sebastien De Chaunac of France in the first set and survived a 6-2, 6-7, 6-4 victory Sunday afternoon in the finals of the USTA Challenger of San Antonio at The Club of Sonterra.
Tursunov, a 20-year-old Granite Bay, Calif., resident by way of Moscow, used thundering serves and timely volleys to break De Chaunac's first serve and jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first set.

"I don't think either one of us played our best tennis," said Tursunov, who defeated No. 14 Gustavo Kuerten in the first round of the U.S. Open. "Maybe I was a little more focused in the beginning.

"Before I came out I told myself to make this as quick as possible so I wouldn't have to deal with my back. (De Chaunac) came back strong in the second set and by that time we had already played more than an hour of tennis and my back was already hurting."

De Chaunac forced the first deuce of the match in the fourth game of the first set and won his first point when Tursunov's drop shot fell just wide of the left sideline.

Tursunov then served three straight aces, including one on his second serve, to go up 4-1.

Two more aces gave him a 5-2 lead before he broke De Chaunac's serve on a crossing backhand return to close out the first set 6-2.

"Once you go down a set, you usually come back strong because your back is up again the wall with nowhere to go," Tursunov said. "It was a seesaw match, but I think the difference might have been that he panicked a little early in the first set."

Tursunov abandoned his early volleying in the second set and De Chaunac stepped up his baseline returns. Tursunov fell behind 5-3, but rallied to win the match's longest game and then broke De Chaunac's serve to tie it at 5-5. He went up 6-5 before De Chaunac won a tiebreaker 7-3 and captured the second set 7-6.

"I'm not a great volleyer to begin with, so I just went back to my strengths in the third set and beat him with that instead of trying to create something," Tursunov said.

Tursunov fell behind 3-2 in the third set on his second etiquette violation, but kept De Chaunac running the baseline to win three of the next five games.

In the doubles finals, Americans Paul Goldstein and Jeff Morrison defeated Tomas Cakl of the Czech Republic and Louis Vosloo of Russia 6-3, 6-2.
