Smile Nico & the DC

Our man rules the DC!Thanks to Nico, Ecuador advances to the 1st group of the American zone.
Yesterday the match lasted more than 5 hours, Nico recovered from 0-2 and managed to secure a win. He kept his head cool during the most important points (see the ties).
Grande Nico!

Here's an article from tenisecuador.com, sorry but no time to translate it atm, but the essentials are in bold

Re: Nico & the DC

I was hoping I'd find at least one interview with Nico while he was here in Brazil!

Here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBha2AQYHqs

He has a very thick accent, but his Portuguese is pretty good. I know most here don't speak Portuguese, but at least it's an opportunity to watch him in a press conference. (If anyone wants a translation, I'd be happy to provide one, though he doesn't say anything exactly fascinating).

Btw, in all the news sites they are saying this might be his last appearance as a pro. He said there's a good chance he won't play anymore next year, especially if they lose this tie...

I wish I could go, but they chose to hold the tie way down south, really far from where I live. :/

yes they say that on Davis Cup website as well,

but did mean it could be his last professional match or only his last Davis Cup match (in case Ecuador loses) ?

Re: Nico & the DC

That's how I understand it - he didn't seem to say anything about specific about ending his career in general but quitting playing DC if Ecuador doesn't advance to the World Group.

Still, totally that he thinks about quitting, one way or the other!

I thought his statement was a bit confusing. He said he was going to play a couple of tourneys in South America and evaluate his motivation to continue, but it wasn't clear if that depended on winning the tie or not.

But today, during the match, a reporter interviewed his mother, and she said that Nico's plan is to retire this year if they lose the tie...

Re: Nico & the DC

I also read that Nico thinks about retiring in general if they lose the tie. I so hope he doesn't.
He has to come back to NL first, he canceled 2 times in 1 year.
But hopefully he'll stay to coach that young player mentioned on his website once and travel with him or maybe travel with Giova once in a while... Then we still have chances to see him.

Re: Nico & the DC

I'm watching livescores now... it's 6-4, 2-1, 40-15 on Nico's serve.
Hope he keeps it up, so we can still see our boy play next year.

edit:
2nd set: 6-4, vamooooooos!
3rd set: 1-6
4rd set: Vamos Nico!!!! And please win it, don't do what your famous for!

Will have to look that up tomorrow though, I'm too tired to wait for it, it's 0:35 here.

Re: Nico & the DC

Nico won the match in style, 5 sets of course.
2-6, 8-6, to complete my post above.

Yay, Ecuador in the world group!

This is fantastic. I'm glad that Ecuador's win over Canada two rounds ago didn't go to waste.
