It's just a case of finding their match fitness, their concentration and their focus again after such a long layoff, and generally that is something they have to do for themselves - a coach can't really help them because it's almost a "growing up" process or perhaps like a rehabilitation from an accident or illness - they have to do it on their own to "find themselves" again - and all fans can do is just support them through it and try not to get too sad when things go wrong.
After the initial shock has worn off, I've come to the same conclusion - I had just finished writing a post for the msn board for Nico.

I have to stop worrying about the points and rankings. He has to keep doing what he is doing - fighting hard, working hard, and trying to get his head together regarding the old injuries - like you said, he needs to find himself.

Eventuallly he will start playing and feeling like his old self, and we'll just support him as he fights his way back up the rankings ladder.

I've been through worse with Nico - in the beginning of 2003 coming back from an injury, he lost in the first round for two straight months. Talk about a nightmare.

Stuck with him then - will stick with him now - of course, cuz he's my angelito! lol!!!!!!!!!!

Me too Alonso - I know that he's suffering out there. And he's all by himself. No coach. No one from his family I don't think is there with him. Just that fitness trainer (who s*cks because obviously Nico's not in shape).

I don't want to think about points anymore - just want him to feel better.

But - last question about points before I move on and never mention them again - just want to prepare myself here for the worse.

He's got 1165 points now. You said he'll lose 190 points here, looking at the entry list for Kitzbuhel he'll never win the title again so there's 250 points, and he's never won a match in Cincy so safe to say he'll lose all of his 400 Olympics points. That will bring him down to about 400+ in total points. Which means he'll be around 100 in rankings just before the US Open. Is that right?

He's just got to hope he has a good Fall - he didn't do much last fall except a couple of tournaments so he can pick up points then.

And then he has to work so hard during the offseason. No more partying, doing the TV thing during the offseason. He has to do like Fena did this past year which has paid off.

Speaking of Fena, I'm not worried about him either. After doing so poorly in 2004, he's just fine now.

Well done boys!!!

Right now I don't care Nico's ranking, I just want that he plays without a pain ... The good results will come soon

I'm trying not to care about his ranking - I don't care for me, but for him, I know he's bumming so I worry about it.

And yes about playing without pain!

I'm so worried that he might have to have operation or something. He said something a couple tournaments ago about what a doctor told him about his ankle. And I even had someone who is spanish read it, and they couldn't tell whether what he meant was that he should try and do the best he can with the ankle the way it is without having surgery (which could mean that he might have to have surgery eventually), or whether he meant that the doctors said just do the best he could to play and not damage it further until it heals completely. I'll try to find the real quote, but even she couldn't tell which one he meant - she said it was vague the way he put it.

Alonso - I still feel like crying. Poor Nico... I really dislike David Sanchez - I hope Fena CRUSHES him tomorrow.

Vamos, Fena, beat Sanchez [who's probably the least hot Spaniard], then win the title!!!

Thanks for your words of wisdom Rosie. I'm so sorry Nico lost-really thought he's make it to the semi's. I realize I'm probably annoyingly optimistic but even though the points aren't there he did make it to a quarterfinal so it wasn't a total bust. For myself, if it wasn't for the points situtation, I'd think he's doing well for someone still coming back from an injury. The point situation certainly sucks and it puts a lot of pressure on him I'm sure I'm just trying to see some sunshine here.
