PORTSCHACH, Austria (Ticker) - Andrei Pavel and Oliver Marach will not be pressed into double duty Thursday at the Hypo Group Tennis International.
Pavel and Marach advanced to the quarterfinals of the $388,630 claycourt event on Wednesday, when no other matches got underway because of steady rain.
Pavel posted a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Brazilian Marcos Daniel, who had upset second-seeded Australian Lleyton Hewitt in the first round. The match was halted after the Romanian won the first set, and he was dominant after a lengthy delay.
He will face Marach in the round of eight Thursday after the Austrian wild card upset eighth-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. Simon had held a 6-5 lead when their encounter was interrupted.
The other six second-round matches will be played Thursday, with those winners also having to play quarterfinals later in the day. Among those who may have to win twice is top seed and defending champion Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, who was slated to play Spanish qualifier Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo on Wednesday.
Andrei df Oli 64, 62.
Cyril Suk/Oliver Marach df Vince Spadea/Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 2-6, 10-3.
They next play Bhupathi/Knowle, who progressed after Chela and Horna gave a walkover (Horna - back).
