Re: World Group 1st Round: Canada at Japan (January 31-February 2, 2014)

If Vasek is fit & plays, this should be an easy win for Canada. If not, it is a toss-up I think.

Scenerio 1: Vasek plays
Kei bt Vasek (70%)
Milos bt Soeda (90%)

vasek/nestor bt whomever (Japan doesn't really have good doubles players - 85%)

Milos vs Kei (pick em)
Vasek bt Soeda (80%)

So Canada probably wins 3-1 ... and if it is tied 2-2, huge probability Vasek cleans up the final.

Scenerio 2: Vasek can't play

Oh no, we have to depend on Frank ... he can be competitive all the way to top-30 level, but can also play horribly (particularly when under pressure) and lose to very low ranked players (just lost in Challenger today to 300+ player)

Kei bt Frank (90%) - Frank might keep it closer than expected but miracle if he wins
Milos bt Soeda (90%)

milos/nestor bt whomever (Japan doesn't really have good doubles players - 75%)

Milos vs Kei (pick em)
Soeda bt Frank or Polansky (70%)

So, it will probably come down to Milos vs. Kei for the win. Actually, right now Peter P is probably playing better than Frank ... I might be tempted to put him in for the 5th if we have to .. but no matter what, if this gets to a 5th and we don't have Vasek, I am extremely pessimistic about Canada's chances.

Milos is out with Ankle injury.

Suddenly this goes very grim for Canada. Doubles+Vasek over Soeda should go our way but now we're asking for Vasek over Kei or Frank over Soeda. That's tough

scratch that, apparently Vasek not playing singles on day 1 either. So we need to beat Soeda twice with lesser players and win doubles.

I hope we get a good draw for the WG playoffs

Vasek aint fit ... and neither is Milos ... this is a toss-up with a 2-headed coin .. and both heads have a smiling Kei on them. Canada is done.

hmm well doesn't canada still have a shot. canada should win doubles. dancevic could beat soeda. and if pospisil can play in return singles he could beat soeda too. not sure about pospisils injury though?

Cant believe how many ppl were writing canada off. Even without pospisil we should be able to take doubles. I wouldnt be surprised to see frank really push kei as he is known to punch above his weight in situations like this. Also i have confidence that an 80% vasek or fully fit peter can take out the japaneese number 2 if needed.

it will all come down to if pospisil is available for return singles or not. canada should win doubles and nishikori should beat dancevic. if pospisil plays he will beat soeda, but if he doesnt then soeda will beat polansky

Canada didn't win doubles. It all depends on Dancevic now.
