Alex, woken up by her hauntingly beautiful, melancholy voice, gently puts his arms around her and begins to kiss her neck ever so lightly. This brings a smile to Layla’s distraught face and she turns around to give him a long, passionate kiss.[/i] “Now will you tell me what happened?” Alex coaxes. Layla hangs down her head in shame and relates to him how she hurt Juan Carlos and how she is an evil, evil person. Alex is secretly rejoicing that she told her husband off like that. It gives him more hope than he ever imagined possible. Besides, he is becoming more and more angry with Juan Carlos. He can’t believe he cheated on such a sweet, sweet girl and now has the gall to play with her head. But part of him is worried about their friendship. Juan Carlos is a great guy after all and he wouldn’t want to lose him, especially not over a woman. Such breakups are always so final. He runs his hand affectionately through Layla’s hair and says: “Look, here’s a piece of advice my mother once gave me. I never believed in it until now. Just hear me out.” He begins to sing in a deep, sexy voice:

If you're down, and confused and you don't remember, who you're talking to.
Concentration slips away cause your baby is so far away.
And there's a rose in a fisted glove, and the eagle flies with the dove.
And if you can't be, with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with.

Don't be angry, don't be sad, don't sit crying over good times you had.
There's a man, right next to you and he's just waiting for something to do.
And there's a rose in a fisted glove, and the eagle flies with the dove.
And if you can't be, with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with.

Turn your heartache right into joy. You're a girl and he’s a boy.
So get it together, make it nice and you won’t need any more advice.
And there's a rose in a fisted glove, and the eagle flies with the dove.
And if you can't be, with the one you love, honey, love the one you're with.

Layla is moved by his words and begins to feel he might be right. As an absolutist when it comes to love, she never thought she would agree with this song, but she could definitely warm up to the idea of waking up in Alex’s arms every morning. He has been nothing but amazing to her and she knows she feels more than gratitude. After the song, Alex looks her in the eyes and says:

“Look, I know you still love him. That’s ok. Such deep feelings can’t just disappear when you want them to. But I’m here and he’s not. I never meant this to be a one-night stand, you should know that. That’s not who I am, no matter what you might have heard. So I guess what I’m asking is what do you want from me?”

Layla doesn’t have to think. She bursts into an intense, half-jesting, half-earnest rendition of a popular song:

Where have all the good men gone
And where are all the gods
Where's the street-wise Hercules
To fight the rising odds?
Isn't there a white knight upon a fiery steed?
Late at night I toss and turn and dream
of what I need

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong
And he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure
And it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life

Somewhere after midnight
In my wildest fantasy
Somewhere just beyond my reach
There's someone reaching back for me
Racing on the thunder end rising with the heat
It's gonna take a superman to sweep me off my feet

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong
And he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the morning light
He's gotta be sure
And it's gotta be soon
And he's gotta be larger than life

Up where the mountains meet the heavens above
Out where the lightning splits the sea
I would swear that there's someone somewhere
Watching me

Through the wind end the chill and the rain
And the storm and the flood
I can feel his approach
Like the fire in my blood

Alex laughs and has an immediate response to this:

Would you dance
if asked you to dance
Would you run
and never look back
Would you cry
if you saw me crying
would you save my soul tonight

Would you tremble
if I touched your lips
Would you laugh
oh please tell me this
Now would you die
for the one you love
Hold me in your arms tonight

I can be your hero baby
I can kiss away the pain
I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away

Would you swear
that you'll always be mine
Would you lie
would you remember
My angel be have I lost my mind
I don't care you're here tonight

I can be your hero baby
I can kiss away the pain
I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away

Ohhh I just wanna hold you,
I just wanna hold you,
oh yeah
My angel be have I lost my mind
I don't care you're here tonight

I can be your hero baby
I can kiss away the pain
(Oh yeah)
I will stand by you forever
You can take my breath away

I can be your hero baby

Layla teases him for wooing her with such a cheesy song by Kurnikova’s loverboy, but her heart is now filled with joy. She throws her arms around him exclaiming “My hero!” “Come on honey, let’s go back to bed” he says and sweeps her off her feet and into his strong arms, while she giggles uncontrollably like a schoolgirl.

Lindsay lost.

It was such a heartbreaking end of the first set. It was hers for the taking and it really took the wind out of her sails. During the first set I was so sure she was going to beat Venus.

WIN THE US OPEN LINDSAY!!!

i was more disappointed in Lindsay with her poor effort in the 2nd set. after dropping the first set 7-5, she pretty much gave up and she can't do that against Venus.

anyway, she has a nice draw for the US Open, and looks good to reach at least the Semifinals! LET'S GO LINDSAY! you won the US Open in 1998, you can do it again in 2002!

Leo!

Thanks! I know, I'm having so much fun with them. I can't begin to tell you how grateful I am to Slave2Safin.

I was disappointed too with the way she gave up. I wanted her to fight. I can't believe Venus won 10 games in a row. But did you see the replay of that stupid line call. The ball was a mile in. I've never seen anything like that.

So did you come to cheer me up.

1998 US Open Champion Lindsay Davenport:

Win It Again, Linzi!

she's been playing great tennis all summer long on the hard courts, reaching 2 Semis and 2 Finals, and hopefully will keep it up in New York!

No, no save those for ILR

Tell me a funny story or something. Or give me some good news. Is Tommy playing tonight or is he in too much pain?

Lindsay was so impressive all week. That must have been the all-time greatest come-back. I really hope she can end the Williams tyranny. The Eurosport commentator observed that she is moving much better than she used to. Now, I didn't see her play before, but I tend to agree with my darling commentators. What do you think?
