Layla is mighty pleased with herself for helping Alex win that match, and more importantly, for outsmarting the other woman. She decides to celebrate the festive occasion with a drink. Unfortunately, she has quite forgotten the effect drinking has on her. After a couple of cocktails with names she never even heard of before, she stumbles out of the bar without even noticing that it has started to pour. Only after she is thoroughly drenched to the bone does she realize it’s raining. The rain immediately sours her mood as she remembers the first time she met Juanqui in Umag.

Moya was the king of Umag of course, king of the nightclubs, king of the hearts and king of the centre court. All the local women were crazy about him, but Layla was immediately drawn to a shy, unassuming and unbearably sexy guy dancing all by himself while most members of the female population all but stripped themselves naked to get Moya’s attention. Layla thanked her lucky stars that not many casual tennis fan knew about Ferrero at the time. Now it would be a different story of course, which is part of the reason she never let her husband go back to Umag.

With a sharp pang she remembers that she would never again stop him from going anywhere and she leans on the nearest wall. Before she knows it, she’s singing again.

the wind is ruthless
the trees shake angry fingers at the sky
the people hunch their shoulders
hold their collars over their ears and run by
it's a cold rain
it's a hard rain
like the kind that you find in songs
i guess that makes me the jerk with the heartache
here to sing you about how i've been done wrong

and i am sitting, watching
out the window of the coffee shop
and i am waiting, waiting
waiting for it to let up
i am rocking like a cradle
warming my hands with the cup in between
i am leaning over the table
holding my face over the steam

and before it gets so cold
that the rain turns to snow
there's just a couple things
i'd like to know

like how could you do nothing
and say, i'm doing my best
how could you take almost everything
and then come back for the rest
how could you beg me to stay,
reach out your hands and plead
and then pack up your eyes and run away
as soon as i agreed

it just all slips
away so slowly
you don't even notice till you've lost a lot
i've been like one of those zombies
in vegas
pouring quarters into a slot
and now i'm tired
and i am broke
and i feel stupid and i feel used
and i'm at the end of my little rope
and i am swinging back and forth
about you

before it gets so cold
that the rain turns to snow
there's just a couple things
i'd like to know

like how could you do nothing
and say, i'm doing my best
how could you take almost everything
and then come back for the rest
how could you beg me to stay,
reach out your hands and plead
and then pack up your eyes and run away
as soon as i agreed

What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?

The rain delay forces Juan Carlos to ponder about his miserable love life again. Only on the court is he able to dismiss the gloomy thoughts that haunt him night and day. No matter what he might do or say he misses Layla terribly, yet has no idea what to do. The thought of her sleeping with his best friend is driving him crazy, but more than anything, he longs to be able to forgive her. Of course it doesn’t occur to him that Layla might not be the one who needs to be forgiven, because he did not technically cheat on her, at least not physically. As he walks around the grounds he hears a familiar voice singing and it pierces his heart with a sadness such as he had never heard before. “I can’t take this anymore” he cries. “My wife is hurting and I need to make her pain go away. And my. Oh this is ridiculous, I’ll just ask her to take me back.”

He walks up to his wife but doesn’t notice how drunk she is. He touches her hand gently but she is so startled she snatches it away. Not that she wouldn’t snatch it if she saw him coming.

Come on Layla, let’s put a stop to this madness. I can’t leave without you. I don’t care what you did, I just want you back.

Fiery red flames escape from Layla’s eyes but they are not the fames of passion. Making her sound like the bad guy in this doesn’t exactly agree with her, so she proceeds to tell him a piss of her mind. Had she been sober she probably wouldn’t spew all her rage in such an unseemly manner, but then again she might.

think i'm going for a walk now
i feel a little unsteady
i don't want nobody to follow me
'cept maybe you
i could make you happy you know
if you weren't already
i could do a lot of things
and i do

tell you the truth i prefer
the worst of you
too bad you had to have a better half
she's not really my type
but i think you two are forever
and i hate to say it but
you're perfect together

so fuck you
and your untouchable face
and fuck you
for existing in the first place
and who am i
that i should be vying for your touch
and who am i
i bet you can't even tell me that much

two-thirty in the morning
and my gas tank will be empty soon
neon sign on the horizon
rubbing elbows with the moon
a safe haven of sleepless
where the deep fryer's always on
radio is counting down
the top 20 country songs
and out on the porch the fly strip is
waving like a flag in the wind
y'know, i don't look forward
to seeing you again soon
you'll look like a photograph of yourself
taken from far far away
and i won't know what to do
and i won't know what to say :confuse:

except fuck you
and your untouchable face
and fuck you
for existing in the first place
and who am i
that i should be vying for your touch
and who am i
i bet you can't even tell me that much

i see you and i'm so perplexed
what was i thinking
what will i think of next
where can i hide
in the back room there's a lamp
that hangs over the pool table
and when the fan is on it swings
gently side to side
there's a changing constellation
of balls as we are playing
i see orion and say nothing
the only thing i can think of saying

is fuck you
and your untouchable face
and fuck you
for existing in the first place
and who am i
that i should be vying for your touch
and who am i
i bet you can't even tell me that much

Juan Carlos is taken aback. This is the side of his wife he never expected to see. Her rage spill onto him and into his heart until he is filled with it just like her. Without a word he turns around and runs off thinking that it might be a good idea to forget about her for ever and ever and ever.

What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?

Why thank you I like to think I'm a pretty good writer--I never knew I was good at comedy, tho I have written some stories and am currently working on a novel.

More VINTAGE Pat He says something totally stupid, then Cliff is like "um, well, he didnt have to at least beat these guys", and Pat turns on the "uh, oh I look like an ass, better change the topic to his serve" - o-meter
And, of course, he still thinks of Johansson as an abberation, even though he defended the the Aussie Open twice, making him a 3-time winner instead of a 1-hit wonder. THAT's what I was going for. PattyMac really pissed me off when he said that during the French, just thought I'd take a little revenge

Arrow Juan Carlos on the Practice Court

Juan Carlos looked down as he bounced the new tennis ball. Practice time was not only a time to think about the match ahead, but also a time to assauge his conscience and assure himself everything was right with the world. Of course, usually everything was right with the world if his conditioning was good, not to mention his confidence. But now, everything was complicated.

He was quite surprised, not to mentioned enraged, when his plea to Layla was dismissed with venom. How could he have not known about this side of her? They were together for so long . . . she was always the sweetest person imaginable . . .

He served as he thought, barely noticing the poor quality.

After being rejected by Layla, it occurred to him that Hackie was nowhere to be found. Now he wished mightily that he had done everything differently, not allowed Hackie to kiss him, not spilled his fear, not taken her home. He had all but ruined his chance of getting Layla back.

On the flip side, Hackie wasn't such a bad companion. She was either quiet as a mouse or loud and fun, singing him silly songs with that beautiful voice. As he retrieves balls from the back of the court, he glances over at her. She's in one of her quiet moods now, curled in his jacket watching Jarkko Nieminen on the next court over.

Juan Carlos looks over at his coach. Antonio is staring at him, mouth agape, arms flailing.

Antonio: Is this what it takes to get your attention nowadays?

Juan Carlos: Sorry. What's wrong?

Antonio (gives him one of those 'duh' looks): What's wrong? Have you even been paying attention to your serving today? It's horrible! The slider out wide is going off-the-charts long, the T serve is in the net every time.

Juan Carlos: I guess I was a bit preoccupied.

Antonio glances at Hackie, then marches over to Juan Carlos and lowers his voice.

Antonio: Look, I don't know what's going on in your life, but you can't let it distract you on court. (Another glance to Hackie.) Though I never figured you for a one night stand type.

Juan Carlos: It's not her I'm worried about, it's Layla. She's gone. Maybe for good.

Antonio : I know she's with Corretja now, but you have your own new girlfriend! At any rate, you've got to concentrate on your tennis if you want to continue into the week! Now pay attention, and give me some more serves!

Antonio walks back to the other side of the court. Juan Carlos sighs, rolls his own eyes, and continues with his drills.

Hi Cilla!

I know, isn't it horrible? But if he pulls through, he faces a qualifier so he doesn't have all the bad luck, unlike someone like Guga.
