"Ferrero's going to be a tough one for anybody. This guy is the real deal already. He's got a chance at going a long, long way. This guy could be the best Spanish player ever; that's saying something." - John McEnroe, June 2000

Thanks, Rebecca. It will be quiet with you not around.

I'm also leaving this week for school, but when I do I'll just be away for two days.

Have fun at the Open, give us some more material for our story!

Please, go back and read it all, you won't regret it. Layla & I are writing about the adventures of Hackie the Mental Hospital Escapee, who serenades her love Juan Carlos with obsessive and silly songs.

Everyone thinks it's great, apparently.

I'm practically having to force hitman to do this, I don't think we can agree on a song.

Exclamation Hackie & Juan Carlos have a heart-to-heart

Hackie is standing around the practice courts at TMS Canada, lackadaisily watching a tall, impossibly blonde left-hander hit with his coach. She cocks her head to the side as she watches his fluid strokes; for a moment she is lost in his motion. She had come to find her love Juan Carlos, but this man had caught her eye for a moment. She sighs and let go of the fence.

Just as she was about to turn around, a hand grabs her elbow and practically drags her forward. She looks up and sees nothing but anger and determination on Juan Carlos's face. She adjusts her step and tries to calm him down.

Hackie: What's wrong?

Juan Carlos: I saw her. With him.

Hackie: What?!

Juan Carlos (inadvertently shooting Hackie a nasty look): My wife. With Corretja.

Hackie (pause): So?

Juan Carlos: So? Alex & I are headed straight for each other in the draw!

Hackie (still doesn't completely understand, but plays along): Oh.

Juan Carlos: I don't think I could face her on the other side of the court. My marriage has fallen apart, and who does she run to?

Hackie (understands): She's just trying to get to you.

Juan Carlos (looks at Hackie thoughtfully): She's doing a good job. (sighs) I'm not going to face Alex.

Hackie: You aren't playing him next round, are you?

Juan Carlos: No, we'd meet in the semifinals. But I'm going to stop this before then. I'm going to default my next match.

Hackie : You can't do that! You'll be fined!

Juan Carlos: I'm already being fined for refusing to speak to the media about this mess with her.

Hackie (thinking out loud): You'll just have to beat her at her own game. Play better than ever in your next match, and the matches after that until you meet him. Show her what she's lost.

Juan Carlos hesitates. He'd rather just nip it in the bud, but there's something in Hackie's voice that makes him decide to go along with her plan.

Juan Carlos: All right.

Hackie puts her arms around his waist, leaning in and smiling.

In the daydream I once had
You were standing oh so sad
But the way you smiled at me
Made me laugh so awkwardly

And if you ever feel uptight
I'll make you wholesome
And I'll make it right
And if you ever fall on your knees
Give me comfort in a bottle, please
Give me comfort in a bottle, please

Though I can't recall your name
I remember just the same
And you seem so far away
But I feel you everyday

And if you're ever feeling down
Just look me up
And I'll be around
And if you ever fall on your knees
Give me comfort in a bottle, please
Give me comfort in a bottle, please

Fly, fly away so high
That you never come back down
You make it so hard for me
To ever wanna be there when you hit the ground
Fly, fly you'll never be around

In the daydream I once had
You were standing oh so sad
But the way you smiled at me
Made me laugh so awkwardly

And if you ever feel uptight
I'll make you wholesome
And I'll make it right
And if you ever fall on your knees
Give me comfort in a bottle please . . .

Juan Carlos feels better about the situation, and continues to walk through the throngs of people with Hackie. A few stare wide-eyed, a few stop in their tracks and watch them pass. Hackie smiles, secretly thrilled she is being mistaken for his new girlfriend.

Talking C. Dri & PMac babble inanely

Cliff: Well, folks, it's been quite eventful here at TMS Canada, and I'm not just talking about on court! In a scandal fitting of former world #1 Lleyton Hewitt, Juan Carlos Ferrero has been fined $1 million for refusing to answer questions about his wife's behavior. (Video of Juan Carlos, arms crossed over his chest, mouth tightly sealed, flashes across the screen.) Layla Ferrero has been spotted cheering on Alex Corretja, whom Juan Carlos is seeded to meet in the semifinals.

PMac: Corretja completely destroyed Richard Gasquet yesterday. It was as if he was on the warpath.

Cliff: Well, surely he'd want to avenge his loss to Juan Carlos at the French.

PMac: He didn't have to take it out on Gasquet! Though the kid deserved to be knocked down to earth. Thanks Alex for avenging the US Davis Cup loss on your way to your own revenge!

Cliff: Speaking of American players, it's a travesty of loss so far in Canada for the Americans.

PMac: First Roddick, then Sampras falters in the second round to George Bastl. The Swiss has had Pete's number since Wimbledon '02, defeating him no less than 3 times since that fateful slam. Even though Sampras hasn't won a tournament in 5 years, he is still at the top of his game, still a contender for the Open come August.

Cliff: We begin our second round coverage today with Ferrero, who is playing one of the toughest opponents on the tour, Fabrice Santoro.

PMac: That's right, Cliff. "The Magician"!

Cliff: Patrick, Ferrero has never lost to Santoro. How do you suppose he has managed that so far?

PMac: Juan Carlos always makes mincemeat of the fading Frenchman. He uses that powerful forehand and quick movement around the court to overpower Santoro.

Cliff: Well, it always proves an interesting match! Juan Carlos Ferrero vs Fabrice Santoro, next here on ESPN. Perhaps the match will be peaceful for a change!

--------------------------------------------------
after the match
--------------------------------------------------

PMac: Truly amazing, Cliff. That's the most convincing win we've seen since Tim Henman at Wimbledon.

Cliff: Juan Carlos just crushed Santoro, 6-3, 6-3. Everything was working today--the serve, the forehand, even the backhand! I wonder if he's heard about Alex's determined play?

PMac: I don't know, Cliff, but he just put in a macho showing himself--a bit surprising for the demure Ferrero. If both can keep it up, it's going to make for a very interesting semifinal match!
