Re: Juan Carlos in Big Apple 2011

Good thing he had two days rest after Andujar. He won't have the same luxury against Granollers but hopefully he can recover.

Re: Juan Carlos in Big Apple 2011

JCF you animal.

Very entertaining match even if it wasn't the best of quality at times, but the drama, long rallies and terrific shotmaking more than made up for it.
I didn't expect JC to come through it after having squandered some good chances in the 3d but he really stepped up the aggression and saved his best tennis for the last 2 sets. Granollers in the next round is not the most demanding prospect as long he's fit.

Rest up champ!!

What a fighter, what a legend

He should have a day of rest, so let's see what happens. I think he has a chance to beat Marcel, he's not in the best form, didn't play Montreal or Cincy and I think Juan Carlos will be running on some confidence, plus their H2H is 3-0 (on clay ) in his favor.

Congratulations, Juanqui! I was so excited when you won that I screamed for joy! I think everyone probably thinks I'm crazy. I suppose I am-crazy for Juanqui!

Good luck against Granollers!

I think it's the first time he's won two 5-set thrillers back-to-back.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Think I became a Monfils fan after that. Such a good gesture after losing on his birthday. Full respect!

Wonder if he'll practice tomorrow. Hopefully not but I don't think players ever take a day off unless they're totally stiff/aching.

Re: Juan Carlos in Big Apple 2011

This result made my day! But to be honest, I think out of the top-10, Monfils is the best match-up for JCF. Many of the other top-10 players can power through / hit through JCF. Monfils, while capable of doing so, plays more defensively, which allows JCF to assert himself in rallies. This is why I believed JCF had a decent chance to win this match even before the match started as he had two days rest - so I was not as nervous as if he had played some other top player. Anyway, hope JCF can recover and continue to perform well in his next match too!

Players performing at the highest level over a 52-week period since I started following tennis:

Federer

Nadal Djokovic

Hewitt Roddick Murray Ferrero (Tard #28) Agassi

Kuerten Ferrer Coria Davydenko Del Potro Safin Nalbandian Ljubicic Wawrinka

Monfils also wastes a great deal of energy with his clownish antics. I'm glad Juanqui won. He has overcome so much and deserves to do well. Great pics! Juanqui really enjoyed his victory.

Re: Juan Carlos in Big Apple 2011

An Interview With: Juan Carlos Ferrero
Thursday, September 1, 2011

Q. Looked like you had the trainers coming to you for your foot, then blisters on your hand. Was that anything lingering or just during the match stuff?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, it was only, you know, maybe because it was a long time that I didn't play such a long match. Also because of the humid. For skin, it's tough to get normal all the time. Is, you know, problems of the matches. I think I'll be okay.

Q. How satisfying is a win like that for you?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: A lot. I mean, this match means a lot for me because, like I said, it was a long time that I didn't enjoy inside the court. Today was very physically match all the time, but I think I played the whole match a very good level. Maybe the serve wasn't work very well in the whole match. But from the baseline I was trying to be very aggressive all the time and move him because, you know, his moves are very good. So always tough to play against such a good player.

Q. Were you able to enjoy that there was a big standing ovation?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Yeah, of course, definitely. With 5 4 in the fifth set, you know, I felt very special on the court. I mean, when you saw this crowd enjoying all the time during the match, but at the end I think they love this kind of matches. So it's great to be in there.

Q. You've had such good results here at the US Open. What is your favorite memory from it?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Of course the year that I get No. 1 here in semifinals against, you know, I beat Agassi. I always like to watch him on the TV when I was young. So was big opportunity for me that year. Was a pity to not win the tournament. But, you know, was great.

Q. Did this match bring back any memories of that 2003 run?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: Not really. I was inside the match thinking in that match, not the other one. It was long time ago, different situation right now. Was difficult to get the memories of that year.

Q. Can you talk about your health. How healthy are you now?

JUAN CARLOS FERRERO: I still having little bit problems with my hip. I have some pain. But I played two matches, five sets. I've been testing too much right now. But I think I'll be okay to play in good conditions next round.

Video of the interview at:

Hope his hip is OK... Maybe he wouldn't have mentioned it if it were really serious because that would give the opponent ideas about how to play him.
Good luck, Juanqui!!
