Lightbulb Quantum Field Theory is one beautiful SOB!!

Sorry for the rude word in the title, but this was my thought when I started grasping what all the fuss was with Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories.

Since high school I've been hearing that Quantum Field Theory and the General theory of relativity were the most beautiful creations by the human mind (hard to believe that those actually top some "close-to-perfect" mathematical theories or artistic expressions), but I'm starting to get a feel of this.

It is rather amazing that just with some arguments of symmetry and convoluted but gorgeous math, we are able to describe all the interactions in this universe with 12 digits of precision!

Anybody else feel this way??

PS This random post is mainly motivated to get rid of the message at the top of my page that I haven't posted in ages. My apologies if you think is a total waste of space.

I do. But if you tried to discuss String Theory here, people would just post info on when Nadal last changed his tension for better control.

I dunno. I recommended Treasure of the Sierra Madre, offhand, in another thread...and sure enough, the University here had a copy, on DVD. I went to the stacks, to pick it out, view it, and put it back, ...but it was gone (despite being accounted for as "in."--) What should they have, in their DVD collection, but a two-part lecture on "Einstein's Relativity and the Quantum Revolution: Modern Physics for Non-Scientists."----Then also, there is the remarkable ability of Dr. Richard Feynman to make physics comprehensible to the layman....I just might bone up, and get back to you, Neumann & BuddyHolly.

Re: Quantum Field Theory is one beautiful SOB!!

Is there any General theory of relativity for dummies book ? I have Bertrand Rusells' ABC of Relativity but is the spanish version, and i feel some things get lost in the translation. It's like James Joyce's Ulises is spanish

The "Dover" Publishers are very good at digesting and condensing such topics at undergraduate level, which can be quite digested by the common audience.

Re: Quantum Field Theory is one beautiful SOB!!

For example following on the Dover Publications, the book titled

Quantum Theory by Bohm is quite approachable if you've had a background in linear algebra, multivariable calculus and some fundamentals of analysis and complex variables. I mean you don't need to master papa Rudin or baby Rudin for that matter, I prefer Royden's but don't know why?

However, boiling down the Shroedinger equation was not fun the time variable made things quite tricky.
