Top Spanish Fashion Show Pasarela Cibeles Rejects 5 of 69 Models As Being Too Skinny

By HAROLD HECKLE, Associated Press Writer

MADRID, Spain -- The organizers of Spain's top annual fashion show on Sunday rejected five out of 69 fashion models as being too thin to appear in this year's event, acting on a decision to bar underweight women from the catwalk.

The show, known as the Pasarela Cibeles, decided in September 2005 not to allow women below a body mass to height ratio of 18 to take part.

One of the rejected models had only reached a ratio of 16, the equivalent of being 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing less than 110 pounds, said Dr. Susana Monereo, of Madrid Getafe hospital's endocrinology and nutrition department, who along with two other doctors was in charge of assessing the models.

Monereo said this represented "extreme thinness."

Three of the five models turned away were not Spanish, Monereo said.

The five models had come from working at a New York fashion show and two of them had taken part in 25 shows before flying to Madrid for the assessment, said Leonor Perez Pita, director of Pasarela Cibeles.

"It could be that they lost weight during that period," Perez Pita said.

She said the Madrid show's aim was to convey a message of "health and beauty."

"Five hundred people will see them here, but through television it'll make it six million, and a young girl may think it's a definition of beauty and may even make herself ill as a result."

The model Raquel Brel, who at 5 feet 11 1/2 inches tall and nearly 135 pounds, passed the assessment, said she agreed with the terms imposed by the show.

"Excessively thin models aren't good for society and don't correspond with reality," said Brel, adding she knew of models who only ate an apple a day while working.

"There are more models who eat little than those whose weight is naturally low," Brel said.

Sure, why not?! I don't think too skinny adds to your beauty and I can understand they don't want this extreme either.

AS long as they kick out all the PLUS SIZE models too, there should be no problem.

great, women who make themselves that skinny make me sick, but I feel bad for anyone who is naturally that thin, then I think about it and a lot of those girls who really believe their naturally thin, think that while sticking a thoothbrush down their throats and gagging on dinner.

Great decision. But I'm afraid it's only gonna be a drop into the ocean. They can ban "too skinny" models but as long as mentalities all around won't evolve, the issue will remain the same. But it's already a start...

Best of LUCK to ALL my Faves in 2015

That's good to hear, it may not help much but at least people have been discussing this issue lately. The average looking model looks scary these days and it's really a shame that young girls grow up while thinking that they need to look like that to be considered pretty.

Re: Models rejected because they are too skinny

Good move. In some cases anorexia is just so ridiculous! There was this Brazilian model who weighed only 88 pounds (40 something kgs) and had been eating only tomatoes and apples for 2 months before dying What image do these women give to our society?? They bring nothing but suffering to female teens. Worst of all is they think they are attractive but most men would rather have bodily woman rather than some skin and bones.

Yes, you know, this article is very precious. The point is, that the model must weigh precisely so, to not to fall dawn under the weight of clothes. It is called the biological test.

It's a start why do models have to be stick thin anyway?

Re: Models rejected because they are too skinny

Hopefully soon we will see more normal looking models, not ones who mostly have the body of a 8 year old child I also think the ones saying "naturally thin" is a problem too. I mean, it’s like they are using this as an excuse for being unhealthily underweight. No matter how you achieve that weight, there is a problem. It’s all over the place recently about underweight celebs on the TV, I hope the actual models also take notice and change their minds.

Re: Models rejected because they are too skinny

if designers designed for all body types and put all shapes and sizes on the runway in the first place, this would not be necessary. but when part of the job description is thinness, of course models are going to make themselves anorexic.

no wait, it's their parents fault, says Gisele Bundchen!
