The title of the article is pretty much self explanatory.
People who are into tennis video games know how much time has passed since our sport got a proper release (aka Top Spin 4, no disrespect to Tennis Elbow). For PC users that gap was even longer.
It seems like the long wait ends next year. :bigclap:
"Per the press release, gamers will have an opportunity to take control of a career and to play with more than 30 current stars of the sport including: Roger Federer, Gaël Monfils, Angelique Kerber, Garbiñe Muguruza. I'm hoping there's also a healthy create-a-player option."
No chance of me buying this game if those are the best players on offer.
Nice. Hopefully they include all the top players, and some Legends of the game as well.
My favorite tennis game ever though, isn't Top Spin or Tennis Elbow. It's Mario Tennis for Game boy color. The campaign mode in that game was amazing, you started off as a newbie on a tennis academy that you got to run around and explore, and then you slowly climbed the rankings and finally got sent to "Island Open" to face off with the world elite. The practice drills on the academy were kind of useful too, not just fillers.
I wish they did a story mode like that for a modern tennis game, with updated graphics and likeable characters. I would buy the hell out of that.
The developers have stated that the game will have a roster of 30 players. Also, following the Top Spin tradition, the game will have a career mode where you join the Tour with your own customizable character.
I remember the Tour mode in Top Spin 2, it had several levels of real life tournaments including the Grand Slams and a ranking system. You could even sign in with clothing brands which had most of their IRL catalogue. This time it should be even better since these guys are doing it because they really want to make the best tennis game possible and honestly, the sky is the limit when you don't have a big company setting deadlines.
Mario Tennis for the Game Boy Advance was just too good... the whole progression thing was so engaging. If you liked that and enjoy golf you should try Mario Golf Advance Tour for the GBA, it had a similar story mode where you would play at different clubs, with their own qualifiers, leaders and training mini games, customize your character and finally get invited to the Mario tournament.
Is this one of those crappy games where no matter how bad you hit you still get the ball in court? I think Virtua Tennis was the last one I tried and it was almost impossible to hit an error.

I'd rank Prince of tennis on DS and Fantasy Tennis above Top Spin as well just because you could use the tennis racket as a fishing rod and get fish sell afterwards for upgrades.
Virtua Tennis was the only game I played. Pretty bad. If you hit the ball out of position, the player would dive. And they could dive 5 times continuously :grin2::grin2: Still they had everyone of the big 4 if I remember correctly. Plus Henman, Ancic, Haas, Becker and a few more.
It's unfortunate that a complex game like soccer with 22 variables is so successful, and tennis with so few doesn't have a solid game.
Top Spin mechanics looked fine though although the player resemblances were off. Grand Slam tennis looked the best.
I'm guessing that's the downside of going indie, but at the same time they will be able to take as much time as they wish to make the gameplay as realistic as possible.
Exciting news. I developed an unhealthy obsession with Top Spin 4 on the PS3 a few years back; after I'd mastered it on 'expert' and become an 18 time slam winner with my created player...well, the PS3 hasn't been used since. This would compel me to buy whatever is the most recent console so I could play this new game. When's it released?
The problem with tennis simulations is the licensing of tournaments and players. There is not, for example, an ATP license like on FIFA, you have to negotiate with all players and all tournaments individually.
Was world number 1 on Virtual Tennis 2009 ranked and played it for years afterwards (and VT 3). VT 3 doubles on the 360 had a dedicated group of players I bet there's still people waiting in lobbies for games now. I wouldn't be surprised! Most fun tennis gaming experience ever was VT 3 doubles.
Never liked how Top Spin as a franchise tried to over complicate the naturally fun and competitive (and addictive) Pong mechanics that is essentially what a tennis game is. Reading the articles for this game it sounds like it will be the most complicated to date. I'll still buy it though, because it's not like I have a choice of games as a tennis fan.

The field is crap, as usual with tennis games. Btw, wasn't AO supposed to be released early next week? So far, nothing on PS Store. Was going to be available only in the day?
I only buy sport games to play online, I don't have neither patience nor time for career modes and the likes. So I'm hoping some fellow MTFers will be up to some online matches.
Hopefully the servers are good too.
What is the average ping you guys usually get in Tennis Elbow?
^ Are you joking? The graphics in that video look like real life, and the sounds is definitely real life, perfect Nadal grunt.
I'm definitely buying AO Tennis, but I'll wait until the Australian Open is finished first.
