We had an inaugural semi-succesful 2016 TE season. Excellent start to the season but as we all know towards the end the last 3 tournaments went over 2 months! This thread is a place for us to discuss how we are going to run the 2017 edition more efficiently. IBM has a lot of things at hand now so I can organize a few tournaments on his behalf. What I would mainly like to know from you all is your ideas about the 2017 TE Calendar, how we can quickly end tournaments on time, brining more players in, other new ideas, etc. I understand we all have lot of other things to do and we cannot commit ourselves to this forcefully. We only play for fun and a little banter but at the same time we should be able to find a middle ground. Let us see what we can come up with.
We need those players who participated at tournaments to be more active and I reckon that your and mine theory of letting the players decide when to play has become useless/fruitless.
We're gonna need to implement @Khronos ' I'd suggest which means that players have maximum three days to play the tie otherwise the winner of it will be randomized. If one player wants to play the match all the time, but can't reach the other one, then the more active player will advance.
I mean look at the mess at the World Tour Finals. Gonna put my foot down now
-I think we should run tournaments Sunday-to-Sunday, so that gives eight days in total with three outside the working week to play matches in.
-Use the max 3 days per round rule as a guide but allow players to ask for more time if they have a valid reason and are confident they can play all remaining matches by the tournament’s deadline.
-If we play a tournament during a Slam it should start the second week (so i.e. Middle Sunday at Wimbledon) because people will naturally have less time the first week due to following real life tennis action.
-Try to recruit more players from MTF and outside MTF (I’ve asked a few people I play with on TE regularly but they are not interested in tournaments at all, unfortunately). It would be great if we could get a staple group of 20 players so we get at least a 16-man draw after withdrawals.
-Decide which tournaments we are going to play in advance (I’m assuming 9 Masters + 4 Slams + WTF/MTF, any others? Maybe we could plan out the first quarter of the year). Also try to get an even number of tournaments across all surfaces.
-Different ranking system? I don’t know but I feel that the current points system doesn’t work so well for a 4 round tournament, especially when it's a Slam, and it is too easy to accumulate points just by participating and not winning matches (this includes “winning” by walkover). I wonder if we should use a different ranking system (the old ATP system? Something we come up with ourselves?).
-Play realistic not fair mode - I was doing some research into how to reduce lag and apparently the game copes better with lag on realistic mode. That’s partly why the official mana games tour uses the realistic mode setting for all tournaments. As we are having a lot of problems with lag between players it might be worth changing to realistic mode next year.
-Use the max 3 days per round rule as a guide but allow players to ask for more time if they have a valid reason and are confident they can play all remaining matches by the tournament’s deadline.
I think when we implement such rules, then it kills the joy for some but at the same time provides balance and speed. I think the laidback speed of the tournament is one of a the main reasons we are going on smoothly. Tricky rule.
-If we play a tournament during a Slam it should start the second week (so i.e. Middle Sunday at Wimbledon) because people will naturally have less time the first week due to following real life tennis action.
Fully agree. Or we can even start the first week and stroll over 2 weeks.

I too tried getting some users from TE Online. They are not interested. Also some of them are on the TE official tour.

This is a very good idea. We can make a TE Calender and we can commit in advance. We can surely work on this idea and realize it.

I told IBM around 3 tournaments ago that we could have own ranking system. I wanted to make a quick points distribution system. Win - 50. Set won - 20. WO - 20. Proportionally for Masters and Slams. That we you get points only when you play and winning a set is rewarded too. We can work on this too, if the players are ok with it.

Hey everyone I'm going to try and do a bit of TE next season, I'll be busy at uni a lot so I'm not necessarily going to be able to participate every week but I'll do what I can. In terms of rules, obviously I'm new so my word doesn't exactly carry weight, but:
I see no reason why tournaments have to be exactly only a week long, especially given that you only seem to be doing 500s and above, so aren't following a strict timetable as such. 3-day rounds seems like a good idea, if you can't find time within then then you're unlikely to be able to participate throughout the tournament.
As far as ranking systems go, it might be worth awarding only points per match won, so no points for entry, byes or walkovers, and maybe award points for sets won, to try and discourage players from retiring.
I don't want to sound mean and make him feel like I'm only targeting him but I feel that menisosantos and others should only really commit if they are 100% sure they are free and can play because that type of attitude has been prolonging the tournaments too much.
We need more people. Simple as that. Specifically new players.
I also feel those who aren't joining in the Mugbook group are at a loss. Setting up matches etc is a pain using MTF private messages and you are missing out on all the banter and discussion about the game. The bulk of the TE activity was when a small group, including myself, all took up the game around the same time and steadily improved by playing each other, tips from some of the good players etc. If we can recreate that with a new bunch of faces next year I think the tour can survive.
I think the tournaments as they are have pretty much ran their course at this point. To keep them interesting we probably need to separate into two divisions, the actuallly good players and the banter level chumps, or focus more on team based competitions.
First of all we should reset rankings and points for every player who participated in 2016, so that newcomers and others have better chances to get to the top. Besides that we will be playing a full season in 2017, while 2016 only started at Wimbledon, so it would be fair enough in my opinion. And as Khronos said we should play every tournament on Realistic mode, where a upset is more likely probably. If the frame rate story states the truth, it would be a bonus aswell.
This ranking was used as Race to London- and seed-list for the year 2016, the same for 2017. AO Seeds are determined by the year-end ranking however. Besides AO this year's rankings won't have any impact on any tournament after the first Slam.
Great pleasure to play @Diadochi in his first online match, ahead of his MTF TE tour debut next year.
For a beginner I was surprised how strong his serve and forehand were, and also how craftily he uses the slice. Movement-wise he started off shaky but it wasn't five minutes before he was rallying like a pro. In summary, he is clearly a natural at this game and one to watch out for.
So looks like we're decided on a Masters + Slams calendar. Would be interesting to get some sort of Davis Cup, UK, Germany, Antarctica, and Rest of World
Any good ideas about out of tournament play? ie TE League
So using InfoKenway’s template, how about this for a calendar:
Brisbane International: 8th to 15th January Australian Open: 22nd to 29th January
Rotterdam Open: 12th to 19th February
Dubai Tennis Championships: 19th to 26th February
Indian Wells Masters: 5th to 12th March
Miami Masters: 19th to 26th March
Monte-Carlo Masters: 9th to 16th April
Madrid Masters: 30th April to 7th May
Italian Open: 14th to 21st May French Open: 4th to 11th June
Halle Open: 18th to 25th June
Queen's Club Championships: 2nd to 9th July The Championships, Wimbledon: 9th to 16th July
Hall of Fame Tennis Championships: 23rd to 30th July
Canadian Open: 6th to 13th August
Cincinnati Masters: 20th to 27th August US Open: 3rd to 10th September
Tokyo Open: 1st to 8th October
Shanghai Masters: 15th to 22nd October
Paris Masters: 29th October to 5th November
World Tour Finals: 12th to 19th November
It seemed sensible to move some of the tournaments forward or back a week (i.e. Brisbane, Monte-Carlo, Madrid, etc.) to space them out better. Also I sacrificed Hamburg and added some grass tournaments to improve the surface variety.
That would be 21 tournaments in total, giving us many off-weeks spare for Davis Cup/team tournaments, etc.
How do people feel about this as a potential calendar? Suggestions for improvement welcome.

I have added the actual surface the tournament is played on ATP tour. We can alternatively uses other other surface. For example I would suggest Rome Masters on Green Clay and Canada Masters on Carpet, etc. We can decide on that. 8 HC tournament seem too much. Until Australian Open we can play as it is in the Calendar and then later decide how to go about it or we should make a pool a week before the tournament starts.
On Modes, I would strongly suggest all the Slams to be played in Realistic modes and all the Masters in Fair mode. The other tournaments can either be Free or Fair in order to give everyone a chance at upset .
On Ranking Points, I suggest we can parallely have my ranking idea along with the ATP distribution too and we can see if people like and if it works out. @Ichbinmüde, I did not mean to give points only based on the numbers I suggested above. We can proportionally for Masters, Slams, etc. It is worth a try. We are not bound by ATP
At this point, I would already like to say I cannot participate in Brisbane due to Personal commitments. I will not be available until 11th of January. So if the tour starts before that you can write my name off.
I would like to co-organize some of the tours such as maintaining/updating ranking points, draws, creating threads, tables, etc. If anyone else if willing to help IBM and me then let us know.
My thinking was that this week would be busy with Doha/Chennai/Brisbane/Hopman Cup + people going back to work/college after Christmas break.
I don't really mind starting early, even though it would kind of defeat the purpose of the calendar, i.e. knowing in advance when tournaments are supposed to start and finish.
