“Long Live Italy!”-Crisis Over a Chinese Commentator Who Just Loves Italy

The dramatic climax of Italy’s 1-0 victory over Australia on Monday proved too much for China’s most popular television commentator, who departed from his normal objectivity with a passionate paean to Italian football.

Huang Jianxiang, who was commentating for an audience of millions on the state-run CCTV, was unable to control his enthusiasm when Fabio Grosso went down in a challenge and a last-minute penalty was awarded to Italians.

“Penalty! Penalty! Penalty!” he screamed, “Grosso’s done it, Grosso’s done it!

“The great Italian left back! He succeeded in the glorious traditions of Italy! Facchetti, Cabrini and Maldini, their souls are infused in him at this moment! Grosso represents the long history and traditions of Italian football, he’s not fighting alone at this moment! He’s not alone!”

When Francesco Totti scored the penalty, Huang continued with his hoarse throat, “Goal! The match ends! Italy wins! They’ve eliminated Australia! They don’t fall down again in front of Hiddink! Great Italy! The great Italian left back! Happy birthday, Maldini! Long live Italy! Italy rolls into QFs. The victory belongs to Italy, belongs to Grosso, belongs to Cannavaro, belongs to Zambrotta, belongs to Buffon, belongs to Maldini, belongs to all the people who love Italian football! Faced with the long history and traditions of Italian football, Hiddink loses his courage, he deserves it! They should go back home, they needn’t go back to remote Australia, most of them live in Europe, goodbye!”

Shortly after the match, the officers of CCTV began to consider dismissing Huang, and Huang has handed in his resignation. Because of China’s political system, it is unimaginable to say “Long live” for countries except China, only “Long Live PR China” is not unacceptable. I’m afraid that we can hardly hear his exciting comments in the future.

Haaha... that guy really does love Italy. Well that's interesting, and it's kinda of funny how he kept listing off names of great Italian footballers.

eternally rooting for:
