But no athlete had the year Novak Djokovic had. No athlete was as consistently superb, January through November. No athlete was as complete in all the aspects of his or her game (...) the best on all surfaces: indoors and out, hardcourt, clay, and grass. No athlete, week in and week out, faced the level of competition he did: men’s professional tennis, as gets said at the start of every big televised match—because it’s true—is in a golden age. (...) And while Federer had some year (2006), he accumulated only about half the A.T.P. point total Djokovic just amassed.

Correct, it generally goes to whoever Time considers the most influential person, not necessarily the 'best' person.

Another more modern choice who isn't a great guy:

I chose two more extreme examples just to show who already got labeled as Time's Person of the year. Thought that not everybody was aware of it.

Sure, yours were the best examples to show what the choice is about. Mine was just to show that they've continued that approach in recent times.

I was looking back to see their last 'bad guy' choice besides Putin and surprised to see that bin Laden/Al Qaeda/the hijackers weren't selected in 2001. Giuliani seems like a choice driven by domestic public pressure.

Is there really such thing as "domestic public pressure"?
Looking at things in the US from the outside, all the media seems to be brainwashed by the toothsayers who legitimately claim from time to time that they know where the future is heading for the common people.
Regarding all the happenings in last 10 years, it's a bit vague, after all...

It's most influential, not "most awesome person." Pretty good call.

Matosevic, Hanescu, Lorenzi, Kukushkin, Chiudinelli, Gulbis, Bozoljac, Gabashvili, Hernych, Brown, Garcia-Lopez, Rosol, Zeballos, Istomin, Kohlschreiber, Tursunov, Robert, Gonzalez, Monaco, Thiem, Seppi
