Re: Anyone willing to help me learn Spanish?

ad, I will join you. I've always wanted to learn spanish too. My son started spanish at school last year so this might help me. I speak french, so I am familiar with the"gender" issue, specially that it is also part of arabic. There are no rules for it though. You would think something should "logically" be masculine and it turns out to be "feminine".

Anyway, here's a nice site to start: http://www.studyspanish.com/ . It is in english. They have a free section. The word-a-day section can be very helpful. Here's an example:

claro clear, transparent
Es tan claro como el agua. It's as clear as water.

I assume clara would also mean clear but for the "feminine" gender.

The site mentioned by lorenz, http://www.zonaele.com/ , is in spanish. So maybe later we can use it.

Re: Anyone willing to help me learn Spanish?

I am working on learning Spanish as well. Getting help from native speakers is obviously supreme, but a fairly nice site I have been using is:

http://spanish.about.com/cs/forbegin..._lessons_2.htm

Andreev - Cilic - Dolgopolov - De Bakker - Djokovic - Gulbis - Haase - Hrbaty - J Johansson - Kucera - Kuznetsov - Russell - Simon - Sweeting - Thron

usually nouns ended with 'a' is feminine but agua is an exception. And my spanish teacher said it's because of the special pronounciation.

My teacher has a list to help us to determine what's feminie and what's masculine and of course, all the exceptions.

Tell me about the exceptions . French has a lot of exceptions, arabic does too. My little girl commented that since a lot of rules in French have exceptions, why is it a rule? Why don't they group the exceptions in one rule? She has the same problem in Arabic too.

Anyway, let's help each other. The site hrbatyfan posted is very promissing. I'll explore it further this afternoon.

My French is not yet at the level of learning the exceptions but Spanish has lot less exception than English, IMO. At least, the pronounciation is much easier. But I had a big problem last year because I had 3 different teachers overtime, an Argentine, a Nicaraguan and a Mexican. Their Spanish are slightly different And on top of it, the South/Central America Spanish is slightly different from Spanish in Spain.

I used that site too at the beginning. The best is to learn to pronounce the Spanish alphabets.

I think this example will make adg give up on Spanish, because it is so confusing. ''agua'' is actually feminine, but we say ''el agua'' because ''la agua'' sounds so ugly. If we wanted to to say ''the waters'' we would say ''las aguas'' because that sounds OK. And we would use ''clara'' as an adjective for a feminine noun, eg. ''el agua clara''

Simple, eh?

Do you mean "agua" is "feminine" despite the use of "el" ?

Afraid so. But I can not think of any more irregularities like this that need to be remembered.

No doubt some Spanish speaker will show up to say I am full of mierda(f).
