I'm also aware of the wierd thing about the male and female verbs, with el and la, but I don't really understand how you can classify certain things as male or female. Like how do I know what a car is? or a house?
There's no rule for things.. you just gotta learn them. Usually words (objects) ending with o (99%) are masc and use el as article and most of words (75%) ending with a use la in this case there are exceptions

Re: Anyone willing to help me learn Spanish?

If you know french it will work

Une maison would be la....
and une voiture would be la...
or Un chien would be el...

Re: Anyone willing to help me learn Spanish?

house = (la) casa
car = (el) auto (arg)

Remember that spanish is widely spoken and there are different words (for one thing) according to the country.
