Re: WORLD CHAMPS SWIMMING

The absence of Thorpe and Van den Hoogenband devaluated the tournament, imho. Yet, I've seen quite a few spectacular races! That South African Shoeman, boy can he swim FAST!

17 (yes, yes, yes!) Slams! And counting....

Ian Thorpe has only won 3 individual gold medals at 2 Olympics (400 free - 2000, 200 + 400 free - 2004).

to put this into perspective, Yana Klochkova has won 4 individual gold medals in 2 Olympics (the 200 + 400 Individual Medley double at both Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympics). But because she was born and raised, and trains in a non-Western country, she receives hardly any recognition, when in fact, she is the best IM'er the World has ever seen - mens or womens.

http://www.fina.org/bio_Klochkova.html

Inge de Bruijn has also won 4 individual gold medals at 2 Olympic Games - Sydney 2000: 50 free, 100 free, 100 fly, Athens 2004 - 50 free.

http://www.fina.org/bio_deBruin.html

Yet all anyone ever hears about, is Ian Thorpe this, Ian Thorpe that. He is a good swimmer, a great swimmer, but in terms of achievements, he is not the best around, yet.

Popov is a great guy, I was lucky enough to train with him regularlay here in Canberra, before he and his coach made the move to Switzerland.

A true legend. The way he upset Biondi and Spitz in Barcelona in the 50 and 100 free - 2 great swims, if you haven't seen them, go watch them on video.
The 1996 Atlanta swims were pretty good too, although he was already King by then.

it's a shame that many of the elite swimmers only contest the Olympics with any vigour, although it also makes the Olympics that more valuable each time they come around.

Re: WORLD CHAMPS SWIMMING

I really really enjoyed watching swimming in the Olympics. But, I can never find it on TV. It depresses me. It was actually exciting, and Phelps was on it

correct, Thorpey has 8 Olympic medals:

2000 - 1st 400m free (3:40.59, WR), 2nd 200m free (1:45.83), 1st 4x100m free relay (3:13.67, WR), 1st 4x200m free relay (7:07.05, WR)

2004 - 1st 200m free (1:44.71), 1st 400m free (3:43.10), 3rd 100m free (48.56), 2nd 4x200m free relay (7:07.46), 6th 4x100m free relay (3:15.77)

lets compare Thorpe to Phelps:

2004 - 1st 100m butterfly (51.25), 1st 200m butterfly (1:54.04), 1st 200m Ind. medley (1:57.14), 1st 400m Ind. medley (4:08.26), 3rd 200m free (1:45.32), 1st 4x200m free relay (7:07.33), 3rd 4x100m free relay (3:14.62)

5 gold (4 individual), 2 bronze (1 individual).

In terms of medals, one would assume that over the course of his career, Phelps will easily out-tally Thorpe. This is due to Phelps versatility, although who knows how long he will be able to maintain his incredible fitness levels across all strokes.
