"Did you know...?" thread

I thought it would be interesting for posters here, considering the international background, to post some interesting factoids along the lines of "did you know...?"

Here are two to start off:

did you know buenos aires has more psychiatrists per square metre than any other place on earth?

This is one I just found out today: DYK some 2.5 billion people watched Princess Diana's funeral on TV??

[absolutely insane!!! I had no idea... ]

MY FAVES: Coria, Nalbandian, Canas, FOXY Ferrero, Guga, Grosjean, Costa, Juan Monaco.

The Pentagon, in Arlington, Virginia, has twice as many bathrooms as is necessary. When it was built in the 1940s, the state of Virginia still had segregation laws requiring separate toilet facilities for blacks and whites.

*You use more calories eating celery than there are in the celery itself.

*More than 2500 left handed people are killed every year from using right handed products.( scary ,ha? at least for me..!!)

*Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh cut off his left ear. His 'Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear'' shows the right one bandaged because he painted the mirror image.

*The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human
jumping the length of a football field.

*An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain (i think some humans share it too)

* Elephants are the only animal that cannot jump

Did you know the human skeleton completely replaces itself every ten years?

Or that the grooves that make up your fingerprints were caused by in-vitro cultures of bacteria that specialise in eating that type of skin?

Why is it insane? Were you there in 1997. Diana was a true global icon who was admired from the Antartic to the North Pole. I wasn't surprised so many people tuned in to watch her funeral. Shows how big she was!!! I don't think any other funeral will ever match hers!!

People might eat oats when they're hungry, but people from Hungary don't eat oats.

What is in a name? More than 90% of people in Bhutan, Burundi and Burking Faso are involved in agriculture.

Nearly 1% of Montserrations are police.

There are more than 2 jails for every 1000 men in Maldives.

‘Dollar’ is the most common currency name, followed by ‘franc,’ ‘pound,’ ‘dinar,’ ‘peso,’ and ‘rupee.’

You can be imprisoned for not voting in Fiji, Chile and Egypt - at least in theory.

Panama hats are made in Ecuador.

Vendetta is the only word of Corsican origin that has made into the Enlish language.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".
