How would you refer to a land stripe of this sort which connects two land masses through water? I need a single word describing it as accurately as possible. It's a plus if you think the word is not too rarely used.
I'd have gone with 'isthmus' for this kind of thing in a sea or ocean. I might say 'land bridge' with a lake, but that's not anything close to a dictionary term.
Isthmus was my best tip from the start, but I thought it looked like a word noone would know unless they found it in a dictionary. I was hoping for an equally good but more intuitive synonym.
^ Width shouldn't be too much of an issue here. I've heard the old Ice Age Bering Strait land connection between Asia and America described as a 'land bridge' by scientist types (or at least science journalist types), and that was probably a pretty wide piece of land.
