Giving them an extra but perfectly fitting scary feel in the context of a film.
And which, obviously, left an indelible trace in your mind.

Mine is, hands down, this scene:

The whole track:

I get shivers everytime. It's just... Wow.

Edit: A warning, the Full Metal Jacket clip includes graphic violence.

NID that Kubrick would get a few votes here. The guy had brilliant taste in music.

Skip to about 2:30 for the music. One of the most devastating scenes I've ever watched. His daughter did the music for this one, and it's incredible dark ambient stuff. She used it to great effect later in the film during the Vietnamese sniper hunt as well:

Jerry Goldsmith created a great theme for the original Alien that he went back to throughout the film:

He also did some great work at The Twilight Zone. This one's particularly impressive as it has to carry an episode with virtually no dialogue. Incredible that they managed to get this kind of music on network TV in the early sixties. Just the music here unfortunately, but it seems to be the entire suite:

Another Kubrick. This is Bartok used in The Shining, and his slow movements almost always get to me. I really wish I could get the full scene on Youtube because the music complements Jack's depression and looming insanity perfectly. The shots of Jack staring off at nothing when alone and then sitting next to a clearly distressed Danny are beautifully shot and acted:

Yeah I see what you're saying.

Man I love The Thing.

Toru Takemitsu is pretty good at the atonal stuff
Never heard a Takemitsu soundtrack I didn't love.

He did Kurosawa's Ran, and this castle siege is great in a lot of ways, but I think it works even better thanks to Kurosawa's choice to drown out the battle sounds and simply go for images and music. First is an unfortunately short clip (the scene goes on for some time) and the second is something like the whole track:

Takemitsu also did good work on some Oshima films. Wish I could find some quality extracts from those films as examples. The Ceremony and Empire of Passion are both worth seeking out.

Inspired by The Thing's synth sound, here's the end from Das Boot (spoilers obviously). Incredible how the composer managed to create such an emotional theme with such cold instruments. Music begins around 40 seconds but the beginning helpfully establishes context:

My friend's brother used to put his head back, close his eyes and listen to movie soundtracks during movies. We thought he was nuts, would start laughing, then he'd chase us out. Few people pay attention to movie soundtracks which is too bad because it's still considered music.

Yeah the 2001 one is very cool, as is The Shining (the drive to Overlook)

Wojciech Kilar's soundtrack For Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula is spooookey. It's amazing how classical music can be made to sound menacing. Listen to the opening. It's funny/sad that the Pirates of the Carib copied entire sequences from that soundtrack. Must be the same studio-lazy buggers.

Here's the whole soundtrack believe it or not.

The opening scene is great. My fav is Gary Oldman's performance at 4:00 when he discovers that his precious "Elizabeeettta" has committed suicide.

Danny Elfman makes great movie soundtracks too! Planet of the apes.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is a great soundtrack indeed. :yeah:

"Libera Me" by Elliot Goldenthal (from Interview with the Vampire). You can hear it during the opening credits:

PS. Also Blade Runner soundtrack by Vangelis has to be one of my all-time favourites. Pick any track.
