Venezuela is not doing well. Chavez followed the path to eventual disaster by using the oil wealth to create a bureaucracy of non-productive jobs and by giving stuff away to buy votes. 95% of export income is from oil. Yet of all the oil producing countries, only Libya lags behind Venezuela in GDP growth.
When the oil bubble bursts, Venezuela will be an agricultural and manufacturing wasteland, much like Cuba is today. Caracas is already one of the world's most dangerous cities for murder and robbery. Imagine what it will be like then, if these are "good times."

Re: Homage to Hugo Chávez, the most humane leader of his times

I can not believe that abraxas failed to inform us that in honour of Chavez, Maduro has created the Ministry of Supreme Happiness in Venezuela.
Sounds like whatever nonsense North Korea can dream up, Maduro is determined to go one better in humiliating his citizens.

And with his new announcement that Xmas is coming early this year (just before provincial elections, it seems) the Venezuelans must be absolutely swooning with delirium at all this happiness being distributed by the government.

At least in Toronto we only have an ineffectual city mayor to embarrass us before the world. In Venezuela the president of the entire country is proving himself a total idiot.

I checked this out. The transcript from the Wright Stuff indicates that Galloway actually said that the boy was executed in Iran, not for being gay, but for committing sex crimes. I suppose his logic is that if being gay is a crime in Iran, then he was a sex criminal.

Galloway is despicable, but his rants sound like a Billy Conolly sketch and make me laugh anyway.

Re: Homage to Hugo Chávez, the most humane leader of his times

And the Christmas spirit just keeps flowing in Venezuela. Maduro has declared that shopkeepers are responsible for runaway inflation in Venezuela, so he has had the army occupy a chain of electronic stores and sell off the goods to happy Venezuelans at rock bottom prices.

But everybody knows that Venezuelan importers are forced to import goods at the black market rate because the government will not let them buy dollars at the "official" rate. That means the importers are actually paying 10 times more than government recognizes they are paying. I guess that is Socialist math 101.

Of course, the Venezuelans realize that after Christmas there will be no more stores to open, right? That the cupboard will be bare, right? That this desperate effort to maintain popularity can not be sustained, right?

Buddy, have you caught TrudeauMANIA yet? Wonder if the son will be as great as the father for Canada.

I will never vote Liberal as long as that airhead is their leader.

At the cocktail party for ladies only in Toronto last week he was asked what countries he admired. And he replied China, because the government there can do what it wants. Jeez, what a bozo. Well, hopefully when election time rolls around he will provide us with lots of laughs at his childish musings.
Of course, his father behaved idiotically too.

Sometimes I think we deserve these types of leaders: gluttonous crackheads and airheads. We mock the americans for allowing Sarah Palin into the political discourse for so long but we're no better. Jr.'s high point was his eulogy at his father's funeral. It's been downhill from there. Well, Castro was at his father's funeral, so it's no surprise that jr. sympathies with the chinese regime.

His father, despite his bleeding-heart and controversial policies, was at least a visionary and an intellectual.

Probably a lethal mix when day to day governing is needed.

Today's cartoon in the National Post is a picture of Chairman Mao wearing a red T-shirt with Justin's face on it.

I have no idea how to do that. But you can find it at Nationalpost.com by clicking on Gary Clement.
