Come here to talk about the old and good rock-n-roll and all its variations.

I was thinking we would have to make this forum more interesting, as we will have a couple of months before the action comes back in tennis. So, cmon, join me.

I'm here!

Can we talk about new rock as well? Ooops, I just noticed you said in all its variations. My bad.

Anyway, I'll join you tomorrow, I'm too tired right now.

My my, hey hey
Rock and roll is here to stay
It's better to burn out
Than to fade away
My my, hey hey.

It's out of the blue and into the black
They give you this but you pay for that
And once you're gone you can never come back
When you're out of the blue
And into the black

The king is gone but he's not forgotten
This is the story of a Johnny Rotten
It's better to burn out than it is to rust
The king is gone but he's not forgotten

Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There's more to the picture
Than meets the eye.
Hey hey, my my.

Out of the blue and into the black
You pay for this, but they give you that
And once you're gone, you can't come back
When you're out of the blue and into the black.

The king is gone but he's not forgotten
Is this the story of Johnny Rotten?
It's better to burn out 'cause rust never sleeps
The king is gone but he's not forgotten.

Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There's more to the picture
Than meets the eye.

What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?

As an avid fan of Pearl Jam, I just bought their new album last week. Riot Act is very very good. Their best new album since probably No Code, or maybe even Vitalogy.
I decided it was worth some review.

Ill talk briefly about each of the songs in the album

CANT KEEP - words and music by vedder
Good rocking song, very Pearl Jam-like. Different sounds, harsh lyrics, powerful performances. Smooth drums beat makes the start especially interesting.
"I wanna shake, I wanna wind out, I wanna leave, (this) mind and shout..."

SAVE YOU - words by vedder, music by all the crew
By far the best song of the album. The best song they come up with since Betterman or Nothingman on Vitalogy.
Energetic beat, makes you wanna shout along with them. The lyrics are also very good, and fit the sound perfectly. Special mention to Ament´s bass on this one. Fabulous.
"And fuck me if I say something you dont wanna hear fuck me
And fuck me if you only hear what you wanna hear
Fuck me if I care,... but im not leaving here."

LOVE BOAT CAPTAIN - words by Vedder, music by Vedder and Gaspar
Slower song, very beautiful lyrics, and a smart mention to the Beatles "All you need is love". It gets you thinking all song along. Interesting mix between very slow parts and rocking bits here and there.
"is this just another phase? earthquakes making waves
trying to shake the cancer off? stupid human beings
once you hold the hand of love.... its all surmountable"

CROPDUSTER - words by Vedder, music by Cameron
It looks like as Cameron came up with the music, he made it a good one for his drums, and they are indeed.
The lyrics are not as good, but the sound is and its even kinda sticky.
"light green to green, dark green, brown
every life is falling down
brown to black, its coming back
dies to be a part of the ground
seed to seedling, root to stem"

GHOST - words by ament and vedder, music by ament.
Good song to enjoy some wicked guitars. Gossard, McCready and Vedder kick ass on that department. The lyrics are also not brilliant.

I AM MINE - words and music by vedder
Work song, the videoclip is on mtv. As always, I dont think the first single is the best song of the disc, but oh well, it comes at a second place, I guess. The lyrics are VERY good, and the sound is great on the chorus.
"The north is to south what the clock is to time
theres east and theres west and theres everywhere life
i know I was born and I know that Ill die
the in between is mine
i am mine"

Just kidding, of course. Everyone is welcome!

I love Stevie Ray Vaughan too, so here's something he sung from the album The Sky is Crying:

Life By The Drop
-branmhall/logan-

Hello there, my old friend
Not so long ago it was 'til the end
We played out in th' pouring rain
On our way up the road we started over again

You're livin' our dream, wo you on top
My mind is achin', Lord it won't stop
That's how it happens livin' life by th' drop

Up and down that road in our worn out shoes
Talkin' 'bout good thangs, singin' th' blues
You went your way, I stayed behind
We both knew it was just a matter of time

You're livin' our dream, wo you on top
My mind is achin', Lord it won't stop
That's how it happens livin' life by th' drop

No wasted time, we're alive today
Churnin' it up th' past, there's no easier way
Time's been between us, a means to an end
God it's good to be here walkin' together my friend

We're livin' our dreams
My mind's stopped achin'
That's how it happens livin' life by th' drop

Ok, Ill finish what I started yesterday.

Riot Act review part two

THUMBING MY WAY - words and music by vedder
The "mellowest" of the album´s songs, it has got probably the best of the lyrics. The soft and smooth sound makes a good package for the words.
"no matter how cold the winter, theres a springtime ahead.
thumbing my way back to heaven,...
wish that I could hold you,... wish that I had,...
thinking bout heaven,...."

YOU ARE - words by cameron and vedder, music by cameron
Matt plays some wicked distorted guitar all along, making the sound interesting and different. VERY different. The kind of music some people love and some people hate.
"love is a tower
and youre the key
leading me higher
when you let me in"

WANTED TO GET RIGHT - words and music by cameron
Strong drums beat, especially during the chorus, a bit of punk guitar here and there, another song not exactly Pear-Jam-like. But its not at all bad.

GREEN DISEASE - words and music by vedder
The typical song you would say one wrote when was high. Its a trip, from start to end. The sound is really good.
"tell the captain
'this boats not safe,
and we´re drowning.'
turns out
he´s the one making waves"

HELP HELP - words and music by ament
Hmm, this would be the only song I cant say I liked. Its not better than regular. Very dark, very emotional, strong lyrics, the sound is very harsh and depressive.
"resevoir,... of fate and fear,...
invisible,... in repair,...
a hundred thieves,... cast a spell,...
this is hell."

BUSHLEAGUER - words by vedder and gossard, music by gossard
Stone made the song, and the start is a great guitar solo. Vedder keeps it going with a "talkative" lead sing. His voice works perfectly well for it. Excelent song.
"a confidence man, but why so beleaguered?
hes not a leader, hes a texas leaguer.
swinging from the fence. got lucky with a stryke.
drilling for fear. makes the job simple.
born on third. thinks he got a triple."

1/2 FULL - words by vedder, music by ament.
Theres a clear inspiration on blues here. Especially the guitar solo that opens the song. And, although they use a style that´s not theirs as an inspiration, the song doesnt sound fake. The lyrics are also great, and fit it very well.
"dont see some men as 1/2 empty
see them 1/2 full of shit
thinking that we´re all but slaves
there aint gonna be,..."

ARC
Instrumental song, Eddie just keeps on making sounds, and there are background voices. Its really weird, as it sounds like a kind of theme song for a movie like "The Dark and the Darkness".

ALL OR NONE - words by gossard and vedder, music by gossard
The song to close the album sounds a lot like a good-bye. The calm atmosphere of a jam session, soft words. There is a good guitar solo in between, but not loud. It keeps the calm and low sound.
"heres the selfless confession
leading me back to war
can we help that,... our destinations
are the ones we´ve been before"

This finishes my review. Im still looking for some more people´s opinions, since I thought the cd was fabulous, but Im a fan of them, and maybe Im biased. Feel free to add or correct something you dont agree with. Thanks

Thanks for the great review Hitman. I can't wait to hear the album. I'll put it on my Christmas/Birthday list, but of course I can't wait till then. I'll probably pay another visit to Kazaa first.

Does anyone at all care about a band called American Music Club? They don't exist anymore, but they took me by the storm when I first heard their album called Mercury (their best one). For a while, they were even my favorite band. But nobody seems to share my passion for them. Does anyone know them at all?

Here's an article from The Book of Rock:

It's one of those imponderables that music aficionados love to ponder: how come San Francisco's American Music Club could be acclaimed by the critical fraternity of the early 90s - leading light, the mercurial Mark Eitzel, was voted Rolling Stone's Songwriter of teh Year in 1991 - but be pretty much ignored by the buying public? Maybe they were just too much of an acquired taste. Eitzel's vidion of a lonely but resilient low life, down but never quite out for the count, was a stark mix of Nick Drake and Ian Curtis, laid over a country-cum-punk sound.

What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?
