Actually, humanity would be much worse without religions.

Not really, lack of religion does not necessarily mean socialism.

CD hit the nail on the head - a decreased world population would also be my number one wish.
I wouldn't want religion banned as it clearly brings comfort to numerous individuals. Removing war, vengefulness from holy books would make many of the world faiths more palatable. Which in turn would make it possible to live a day without reading of yet another middle eastern horror occuring.
Deforestation of the Amazon would be outlawed & harsh penalties applied.
Sharks & other wildlife wouldn't be vilified.
No-one would be forbidden bacon.

Without religion, a large portion of the world's population would have a sense of purpose which would make the world much worse, IMO.

@OP: I guess your post mentions more of what you didn't write than what you did. If so, would you mind sharing what you did write?

As Bill Maher said, the comfort that religion brings comes at a very high price.

But I still think it would be wrong to ban it.

He's right. (Religulous documentary was a good watch.)
I was trying to make the point that editing holy books would improve religion's perception to those of us, who with good reason, don't buy the whole 'peaceful religion' PR.

It was not about making new laws, it was about restarting the world. I would restart it without religion, so there would be no need to ban it. It just would not exist. If it reappeared later, then clearly we learned nothing from the first mess.

Oh Jimmy. I feel like I'm typing English & folk are reading Yiddish.
Laws can't be changed 'restarting' the world? I missed this restriction by Punky. Abraxas21 stated 'humanity would be much worse w/o religions.' BauerAlmeida & yourself disagreed with that opinion. My opinion to what was being commented on - I wouldn't want religion banned... Religion would exist on restarting the world. Just because I don't adhere to a particular religion, I wouldn't ban it for all.

Once again, on restarting the world I would edit all holy books, removing all passages such as - 'But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.' 'And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out.'

Re: Restart the world

I would sprinkle fairy dust on militant atheists and religious fundamentalists and turn them into open-minded, religious progressives and the world will will be full of less angry and spiteful people.

Americans, Canadians, Brits, Del Potro and whomever else I feel like rooting for (on any given day it might be Federer, Nadal or Djokovic since they are all awesome)

"It’s not just the athletic artistry that compels interest in tennis at the professional level. It’s also what this level requires -- what it’s taken for the one-hundredth-ranked player in the world to get there, what it takes to stay, what it would take to rise even higher against other men who’ve paid the same price number one hundred has paid." -- David Foster Wallace

Yes of course, and you want to bring back the Commies as well.

Marxist ! "Opiate of the people" All Marxist bullshit ! You, Marxist ! (Marxist and all that goes with it ! Gulags and all...).

Religion does not bring comfort at all, it's going the hard way.

Look at all these atheists. How surprising they wish to restart the world. They're bourgeois... utopians/intellectualists/elitists. We know since Huxley and Orwell that any kind of revolutions from above leads to dystopia rather than utopia.

The common men do not want to change the world. They know that the world IS.

These atheists are really baby-Leo Strauss. They think the mass is to weak to emancipate from moral constraints such as charity, hospitality, solidarity, amiability, ... while 'we' - the Philosophers - can (Nietzsche's "atheist priests"). And of course they would use a religion in order to pacify the mass, but MOST OF ALL never would believe in it (Voltaire power!).

How surprising the most of the baby-Strauss like Hitchens became Bush fans/neocons/Iraq War advocates.

Disgusting people.

Re: Restart the world

Not surprising that you equate atheism with politics, when really it is just the realisation that there is not one iota of evidence for the existence of a supernatural being. No different than belief in the supernatural powers of a comfort blanket.

I jokingly stated 'bring back the commies' because of the ridiculous statement made by Patriarch Kirill about gay marriage. Religious people can make lunatic statements but I'm forbidden? Even when I'm joking? Rough deal. Try & understand 'all knowing one.' Religion clearly brings comfort to many people, a number of whom I know personally.
I can't help noticing your reluctance to comment on post #239 - in thread, Just curious...what religion are you? Particularly the 'example of hypocrisy.'
