correct. Table tennis used to be more even between offense/defense but developments in the game has all but removed the defensive specialists and now it's generally regarded as suicide to "wait for errors".
Modern table tennis is very much about taking command of the point and being on attack is the best defense. But spin-wise the game is a lot crazier than tennis and it's not just about topspin. Side-spin, backspin etc. must also be mastered.
Reason both Waldner and Persson for example were still good enough to reach Olympic semi-finals at 40+ is that it's not just about reflexes. It's also a lot about experience. Being able to read spins and patterns of play can count for more than being insanely fast or having great endurance.
