After a Glitch, Perkins Joins Greats in Hall of Fame
02-Jan-2006 Craig Lord
The International Hall of Fame has admitted that it excluded Kieren Perkins from its latest list of swimmers to be inducted this year because of a mix-up over the date on which the 1992 and 1996 Olympic 1,500m champion retired.
Perkins hung up his bathers and goggles after winning the silver medal behind Dolphins teammate Grant Hackett at the Sydney Olympic Games. He should therefore have been named alongside Susie O'Neill, Olympic champion over 200m butterfly in 1996 and over 200m freestyle in 2000, in the latest list of those due to take their place among the greats.
His omission was spotted by Nicole Jeffrey, swimming reporter for The Australian. Her story prompted Glenn Tasker, Swimming Australia chief executive, to contact Hall of Fame president Bruce Wigo.
Wigo explained that the Hall of Fame had suffered some financial problems and endured a bumpy change of administration. The error would, however, be put right. In a stement, Wigo said: "Perkins' competitive record made him one of the all-time greats in his sport and his selection, once eligible, was all but guaranteed. However, there was apparently some question as to the date of his retirement, which kept him off the ballot. Once this point was clarified ... directors moved to approve Perkins' selection to the class of 2006."
Meanwhile, SwimNews understands that Mark Spitz, among other leading lights, are pressing for the Hall of Fame to be moved from Florida to a new home in California. Such a move, they say, would provide a better environment and display for the sport and its greats. It might also save the Hall's library of swimming books and documents from being confined to the scrapheap: at the moment, the library is destined to be closed permanently.
A sport without folklore and legend, without its history recorded, documented and accessible to a wide audience is a sport destined to fade in importance.
