Te'o was considered to be all that was right and good about college football. He was more than an All-American linebacker from Notre Dame; he was an ideal, a template for integrity, compassion and humility.
Te'o might still be all of those things. Or none of them. We still don't know for sure.
We do know he issued a statement saying that he was the victim of an elaborate online and telephonic deception. We know that his "girlfriend," and her death from leukemia, were the figments of someone's depraved imagination.
What we don't know is whether Te'o's imagination was involved in the deception.
The sports world has been abuzz the last 24 hours over the hoax heard around the nation. One of the two most popular college football players of the season is Manti Te'o linebacker from Hawaii who plays for Notre Dame. The genesis of Te'o's popularity came in September when the story broke that he suffered through the death of his grandmother and girlfriend within a span of 12 hours. The media latched onto this story and Te'o became somewhat of a hero throughout the season while playing very well for Notre Dame this season.
The story that broke yesterday evening
Yesterday it was revealed that the death of his girlfriend was a hoax.
example of the hero he was made into
The whole story has become an absolute soap opera. Some people say his girlfriend never existed and the relationship was online for 3 years and the two never met. Others have said that she does infact exist and duped Teo for years. I have a feeling this story is just getting started.
