Re: THE Country Celebration Thread

Over to Italy!

My Italian athlete is Maurilio de Zolt, a cross-country skier who managed to win a World Championship gold medal at the age of 36 and an Olympic Gold medal with the Italian realy team age 43. He did not really come into his own before the skating technique was developed, which did not happen until his mid-30s. Amazing to be able to reinvent yourself at that age.

My favorite italian athlete:

Alex Del Piero

And this is a great song from an italian band I used to listen a lot:

Appena Un Po'-Premiata Forneria Marconi

Over to South Africa!

My South African athlete is Gary Player, a golfer with no less than nine major titles and 165 international titles, the most successful non-US player (!) ever. Player is also known as the most travelled athlete of any sport, having few tournaments located close to his native South Africa.

Maybe. We'll just have to wait and see if he wants to return. You being here should definitely be a tick in the "plus" column, though, no doubt about that

Over to the Netherlands!

My Dutch athlete is Sven Kramer, a speed skater extraordinaire, with a record six all round world championships and a record 13 single distance World Championships. He's generally recognized as the greatest speed skater ever.
