Re: Neil Armstrong is dead

When I first read this, I thought of Lance Armstrong. My immediate thought was that he killed himself after being stripped of his Tour De France's.

And the Dumbest Generation said, "Who iz Neel Armstrong? Wuz he BANned from riding bikes?"

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

Realistically, he was just the one face in front of a huge team. The lasting image will be of Neil Armstrong, but when I think about it, the engineers that made the rocket and lander function perfectly had an even greater achievement.

very true. My calculator has way more computing power than they worked with to get man to the moon. It's stunning

maybe it's my inner ignorance talking but i'm still oblivious to the benefits that the armstrong moon landing has brought to my home.

Not every pioneering movement of the world needs to be as personally useful as a toaster or washing machine. Sometimes, the utility of things aren't known for a long time, and it doesn't go to say that the world should stop being inventive.

“When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men in a society, over the course of time they create for themselves a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it.”

in that case, i'll celebrate armstrong's achievement once others scientists use the fly-to-the-moon rocket science to build me an improved toaster or washing machine. only then i'll finally be able to declare what a giant leap for mankind it was...

You finally couldn't resist an appearance, could you?

It may have done nothing for you, but all us Yank-loving Capitalists felt immensely proud and happy to witness man's conquest of space.

But seriously, the moon landing is just a part of the whole space programme, including the satellites that now allow you to read politically correct news sources from around the world within milliseconds. If you have a television, computer or mobile phone, then you are a beneficiary.

"man's conquest of space". i hope that's not a sentence you originally made. only americans could come up with such pompous ideas!

i thought of that possibility but while it's true that the satellites and stuff are evidently linked to the whole space programme in general, i'm not sure if they're specifically linked to the moon landing in particular.

but seriously on my part too, i don't wanna play the cynic part. i have far less problems with gvts spending their fat stacks in space ships than in war ships. all in all, there have been a lot of advances related to both fields but the space programmes have more commendable goals.

as for armstrong, i don't know anything about him other than the fact that he was the first man on the moon. I hope he rests in peace. in the words of buffy sainte marie, who managed to compose one of the most beautiful songs of the XXth century, i can say this:

off into outter space you go my friends
we wish you bon voyage
and when you get there we will welcome you
and still you'd wonder at it all

Hats off to the great person. He was an inspiration to many present and future astronauts.
