Voula Papachristou, the Greek triple jumper was sent home from the 2012 Summer Olympics after posting a racist message on her twitter page:

Why are the football venues so far from the olympic city itself?

I can't really see the logic, especially since there were probably more than enough stadiums within London itself (Wembley, Twickenham, Stamford Bridge, Emirates, White Hart Lane, Boleyn Ground...).

Probably to give everyone countrywide a chance to see some Olympic action. It also busts the notion that London is the only city here (which is the impression given to a lot of people worldwide) and proves not everyone is a Royalist, posh speaking Eton-educated toff.

Looking forward to seeing Uruguay, I think their squad is superb and Suarez will probably give the UAE a long evening. GB-Senegal, well who knows about that one.

Re: Olympic Games 2012 London Thread

IT seems like there may be some thunderstorms in the evening of the ceremony. I can't fathom why it's so late when NBC won't even be showing it live, so they can't say they're catering to the US networks.

Re: Olympic Games 2012 London Thread

I've travelled back to the UK from México for this event and cannot wait. I'm lucky enough to have tickets for the México-South Korea football match in Newcastle today, women's indoor volleyball on Saturday, men's field hockey on Monday and Brazil-New Zealand football on Wednesday. Should be great.

I don't think México can beat the likes of Uruguay, Spain or Brazil (although they have owned Brazil at many age levels over the past 10-15 years), to win the gold medal. However hopefully they can make it out of their group. A hypothetical QF against Uruguay or GB would be quite exciting.

They played very well in their warm-up friendly against Spain at Cádiz, but were terrible against Japan at Nottingham. Party boy Dos Santos probably won't start today.

Re: Olympic Games 2012 London Thread

Fun evening. Two decent games. The best side were the side who lost I thought- UAE! Played some fine footy and missed a hatful of chances. GB-Senegal wasn't as lively, but Senegal deserved the draw.

One moment I thought was sweet was when Senegal equalised and a Senegalese guy a couple of rows in front of me raised his little boy aloft to smiles from the home support. It epitomised the spirit of the Games and what they stand for.

Only one photo, got a vid to upload during the Uruguayan anthem (which some Manc tossers booed Suarez when he appeared on the big screen).

I wasn't at Old Trafford yesterday I was at St James's Park, but good to see Canadian representation there. Thanks for the photo and summary, and glad you had fun watching 4 very good teams and 2 lively games.

As for the two games I saw, México-South Korea was boring, and the decision to start Dos Santos on the bench was very silly. He usually plays very well for Mexican national teams at all levels at major tournaments. South Korea were comfortably the better team and created more clear-cut chances.

There is quite a large Mexican postgraduate population in the UK, and I met some of them before the game yesterday. A few of them, like some football fans I know back in México, have quite a dismissive attitude to all teams outside the European heavyweights and Argentina and Brazil. I tried to tell them before that South Korea, like Japan, are a strong and very underrated footballing nation, but they didn't believe me.

Gabon-Switzerland was a much better match. A draw was a probably a fair result although I thought Gabon edged it. So all 4 teams are level on 1 point in Group B and it will be interesting to see who reaches the knock-out stages.

On a side note despite there only being 10 countries in CONMEBOL, given how strong a footballing continent South América is (especially at U20 and U23 levels), it is pretty unfair that they only 2 qualification places at the Olympics, while Africa get 4 and Asia get 3.

They always spread the football around the country. They did it in Sydney, also in Athens.

Stuff the opening ceremony.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".

I'm no Fakervic fan but he needs to save tennis, sadly tree trunk legs will be fresh. Interesting he's never questioned....

Bellamy and Giggs not singing the anthem, plus the Scottish lassies not singing. There is no law saying that a sportsperson has to sing their national anthem.

Feldman probably wants them stoned.
