To be fair in every sport where the Olympic title is the pinnacle, the worlds are only a partial barometer because everyone aims to peak for Games, not the Worlds.

The world champion has finished outside the podium at a number of events across the board at the Games.

Why would it matter since is per capita?
And you also have (for example) both USSR and Russia there:
58 Russia 368 143,056,383 388,740
48 Soviet Union 1,010 272,000,000 269,306

because if you add up the gazillions of medals the soviet union racked up prior to 1992, the russian count wouldn't be as poor as it is on the list, for example.

Before the Olympics you posted that home teams always do really well. Now you are suspicious that GB is doing really well.

But USSR has 1 medal per 269,306 people while Russia has 1 medal per 388,740 people.
So they improved. It only shows from which part of USSR the medals were coming from.

It's not a dissimilar performance to this year's world championship at all If you look at the Olympic events at the World Champs, GB won 3 golds in the womens events, and they've won 3 at the Olympics. The men won 2 golds at World Champs (relegated in team sprint, and won silver and bronze in the individual sprint) and they've won 4 here.

I'm not sure how it's suspicious, considering the boost the home crowd is givig the cyclists.

Sir Chris
