Generally speaking we take sport less seriously than Europeans do with football, but yes many people here take life way too serious.

Without looking, some combo of martial arts and weightlifting I'd guess.

Not bad.
4 weightlifting titles and 1 (very big) cycling gold. No martial arts, but it's a safe bet Vinokourov threatened Uran with violence if he dared to beat him in the sprint.

17 (yes, yes, yes!) Slams! And counting....

That cycling gold should be Cavendish's

historic achievement by rupp and no interview or live medal ceremony on nbc....disappointing to say the least. hopefully they'll air it in prime-time.

He shouldn't have led a big group get away then.

Russia has 15 silver medals for 3 golds.
Still, Australia's ratio is worse. 1 gold (in the womans 4*100 freestyle, who would have thought the rest of the swimming competition would be such a failure?) and 12 silver medals.

17 (yes, yes, yes!) Slams! And counting....

each korea easily outdistancing japan, also kind of surprising. south korea seems to win everything that's remotely possible, like carrying out a sports masterplan.

Read something recently that says Japan as a nation is getting so old, that their medal count is going to continue to drop. The same article suggests at some point it will happen to China a bit as well with their restrictions on child-bearing.

Kiddin' me?

1 day after the Tour de France? and when basically everyone opposing team GB in that race were out to stop Cavendish winning.

It's a travesty the fastest man on two wheels didn't win that gold.

Thats life..

Re: Olympic Games 2012 London Thread (All other sports besides tennis)

You have your Phelps and your Bolts but for me considering what he did just one day before the games started. Wiggins is my Olympian of the whole games, winning the Tour de france outright, laying it out for Cavendish 1 day later, cycling his heart out in the chain gang. Then just days later, smashing the competition away on the Time Trial.

Amazing.

Interesting theory. Japan has been aging for a while and I'm not sure if we're really seeing a drop in Japans performance. They've captured many medals at these Olympics so far.
As for China, their family planning policy has been in effect for over a generation and we're not seeing any effects sportwise. Not surprising, with a population of 1.3 billion and state funded sports programs, you basically have unlimited potential of sporting success.

Speaking of which, I have the impression that India is beginning to show themselves in more sports. They've won their first ever badminton medal, were active in shooting and archery and I saw Indian athletes at the discuss and 10k for women.

There's plenty of untapped sporting potential in India. In Africa too, by the way.

That's not a travesty, that's sports. When you're the clear cut favourite, people are going to race against you. Most of whom participated in the TdF too.
No point in waiting for a mass print, everyone had to attack, attack hard and attack early. Not to stop Cav winning, but to have a shot at an Olympic gold yourself.
