Best Ways To Study?

Basically I have 8 exams to do in May and ever since I begun Uni in September my attendance has been more than appalling and I'm far behind. Had a go at 2 of the exams back in January and got awful grades to say the least.

Anyway I have just over 2 months to somehow study all I need to do but I don't think I'll be able to pass all of them at this rate. Seeing how intelligent MTF members are though does anyone have any advice or good ways of studying? At the moment all I'm really doing is reading from text books and I have like 1000 pages to read and understand if I want to pass and that's just stupid.

Re: Best Ways To Study?

That is 16 pages a day. Work in a room with no TV and no computer and don't come out until you have done your daily quota.

16 pages is nothing. If you do not have the discipline to do that, university is not for you. Better to quit now.

Re: Best Ways To Study?

2 Months to prepare for a Exam is like having 2 Weeks Off before Wimbeldon. Its a lot of time.

If you are still feeling nervous i would advise go and ask somebody who has been there done that. And do a lot of selective studying. No need to cram the whole Book.

Re: Best Ways To Study?

Thanks guys.

I guess considering it's only 16 pages a day it isn't that bad at all. Will just try hard and reward myself every now and then to make me want to continue.

Re: Best Ways To Study?

Don't you have class notes/power point lecture notes you can borrow? Easiest way is to get hold of a smart friend and have him explain the notes to you.

Re: Best Ways To Study?

My greatest tip is to always ask either my lecturers, tutors, and (if applicable) lab assistants -- no matter how late dilemmas are left. Of course, best ask them ASAP. I'm sure they can help you out alot more than we can . Email them or somethin' .

If you have mates that are going quite well, don't be shy to ask them for assistance too. At a time like this, I think the last thing you want right now is to suffer in silence and being strapped to a book or a set of lecture notes while in a quiet, isolated room.

Re: Best Ways To Study?

I too am shit and very lazy when it comes to studying. Best thing to do I think, rather than just reading through text books, is to make short concise notes in a A4 pad as you go. Then be sure to memorise any key words, phrases, points, etc that you know you want to touch upon in the exam.

Of course sitting down and doing this for hours resisting DVDs, the internet, the fridge, the shitter, et al is the toughest part. As BroTree said, sometimes another person helps, especially to help you memorise things.

Re: Best Ways To Study?

Stop reading this for starters. Get off MTF, place your laptop/PC/mobile (phones are the bane of studying) in the hands of someone who won't give it back to you no matter how much you beg (preferably a thief). Then put on some light background music (no earphones - they distract your brain waves) to keep you awake and motivated.. something like Mozart's original lacrimosa.

Then you do what has already been said.. read through the boring stuff bit by bit, picking out the important key info, and writing it down from memory in note form. Not sure what your course is, but it might be a good idea to research into some of the background of what you're studying. Might keep you a little more interested in it if you knew how it came to be. Be sure to leave time to do some past exam papers as well, very important these if they exist for your course.

I don't do any of these things, but I'm human so I advise you to do things I would never do.

So someone recently informed me that my sig was empty. Said I needed a life affirming motivational quote by a positive role model like Einstein or Oscar Wilde...

Great tip to stay fit and mobile: If you run up and down the stairs two steps at a time at least once daily, there will never come a time when you can't do it. Until of course one day you mistime a step, collapse and break all your bones... That would suck. But you had a good run.

Re: Best Ways To Study?

Thanks everyone.

Going to go ask some friends for some notes and look up some past papers. Will try to aim for 20 pages of reading and work every day and then after Miami but everything else away and do a month or so of solid studying without any distractions.
