Only if snooker, darts and chess are sports.

I agree about the status of olympic sport not meaning that much. Obviously, regarding this issue there is not such thing as an objective answer. I consider it a sport, but at the same time I do understand the arguments of those who don't.

Fair enough. But look at a javelin contestant after he's made a throw, & then look at a golfer after teeing off. One of them is screaming with pain & effort with all his veins bulging, the other is calmly gazing into the distance.

Chess definately isn't, you have to move a piece from 1 spot to another based on strategy, anyone can do, and you don't need great reflexes, or hand eye coordination, or stamina, etc.

I would say no, based on the fact you sit don't move a lot while playing, though it does require a steady hand, and good hand eye.

Fish can be a sport if it's in some sort of competition I would think so

Poker isn't a sport, and yes I agree shouldn't be on sports channels

There's plenty of grey area between sport and game, and everyone will never agree when something is in this grey area, but I definately think Golf is a sport, and things like chess, and poker aren't

Given what passes for a sport these days, I dunno why it isn't.

Re: Is golf a sport?

For a the casual person who doesn't exercise nearly as much as top athletes, it's comparable to jogging I'd say, only more fun. That is of course if you walk the whole round. Carrying the bag on your back is also a plus, which I almost always do.

However, for a pro athlete it isn't that tough. I doubt Nadal even breaks much of a sweat when he plays.

The answer to this question depends solely on the definition of sport. I'd say competitiveness is one, also a clear set of rules that is accepted by the hobbbyists. How physical should it be then?

I'd say that golf is more a sport than snooker or darts, a bit less than baseball. It's very vague.

Re: Is golf a sport?

Golf qualifies as a sport because of the physical techniques involved. (Though I would never admit this with too many golf fans around)

There are no technical requirements to play chess. Stephen Hawking or a stationery computer can kick your ass at chess so it's a really, really shitty comparison.

And yes, darts and snooker meet my definition and are both excellent sports.

If you want to take a long walk, take a long walk. If you want to hit things with sticks, hit things with sticks. But do not combine the two and put the results on television under the label "sport".

Archery, to me, is not a sport. At all. When I'm at the tennis courts on Saturday mornings I see people in Archery walking past me carrying their bows (or whatever) and they're these scrawny geeky things. The flip side of fat golfers. Still not athletes.

Snooker/darts/poker/fishing = not sports. Then again, I saw the spelling bee competition on ESPN once and no one would argue that the spelling bee is a sport, so I guess just because something is broadcast on a sports channel, doesn't mean it's a sport.
