Re: My dad built a chapel...

CR is actually a rip-off these days. Monteverde for instance may have been about saving the cloudforest at one stage, but now it's all about squeezing as many cents as you can from unassuming tourists' pockets really.

Guess that's what you get for having no capital gains tax and selling your soul to a bunch of opportunists whose prime goal is building condos.

If anyone does actually want to visit the place btw, just send me a message or post in here. I'm serious.

Do you think it would be better if the locals remained in charming poverty?

The cloud forest preserve is quite large. I don't think there are any condos in it.

Listen for that beauty, if I had the money I would gladly be a tourist there!

Um, most of the people that own the big properties/developments these days are gringos rather than Ticos.

Wasn't really talking about Monteverde as far as condos are concerned (that's more the Pacific coast), though there are a ridiculous amount of hotels in the area for a property that's 'only' 10,000 hectares.

Re: My dad built a chapel...

The chapels look great, but more than that, that's some phenomenal photography.

So someone recently informed me that my sig was empty. Said I needed a life affirming motivational quote by a positive role model like Einstein or Oscar Wilde...

Great tip to stay fit and mobile: If you run up and down the stairs two steps at a time at least once daily, there will never come a time when you can't do it. Until of course one day you mistime a step, collapse and break all your bones... That would suck. But you had a good run.

The pictures were taken on a phone!

A professional photographer came out to the place last week, so I really hope the results are something spectacular.

Yes, but tourism is now the main income for CR. And CR actually goes out of its way to invite foreigners to retire there. Given the small amount of arable land compared to mountains they know they have to sell the country to outsiders.

I know I sound like a broken record, but I used to get annoyed when tourists came to Cuba and declared how wonderful it was without McDonalds and Taco Bell etc. Wonderful for who? The Cubans I know dream of being able to eat a Big mac.

Re: My dad built a chapel...

Perhaps.

Anyway, this place is CR's best kept secret. Then again, it's a bit of a white elephant because it's neither an eco-lodge nor a 'resort'; merely a private reserve, and most people can't really be bothered with the trek it takes to get there.

Oh my if those pictures were taken on a phone I can only imagine how even more beautiful the area will be with a professional photographer

Re: My dad built a chapel...

This is the chapel on Christmas Day - note, it's nothing new really, just a couple of pictures from a different angle.

That really has to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. Your father did an amazing job and now he even gets to enjoy it by living there

Re: My dad built a chapel...

He keeps getting hassled by people unfortunately: poachers, the police, the environmental ministry.

Not one tree on the land has been felled in the construction of the buildings btw, it was just pasture on a bit of a savannah previously. Meanwhile opportunists are bulldozing rainforest so they can put in condos and holiday homes with an 'ocean view' - with no questions asked. It's sad really.

It's a private reserve that my dad has, and he initially bought the land just to protect it.

Re: My dad built a chapel...

Your father sounds like a wonderful man. And it is a shame that someone like him is getting hassled instead of the condos/holiday homes builders The land should be protected and I'm so glad your father is doing all he can to protect such beauty
