Re: The Best National Anthem...?

I dislike all of them. It's nothing more than nationalistic brainwashing unnecessary crap.

Favourite National Anthems

What are your favourite national anthems?

Personally, I love the ones from the nations in the British Isles, except God Save The Queen which I find quite dull.

Wales

Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (Land of my Fathers)

Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mad,
Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.

Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad.
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.

Scotland doesn't have an official anthem. Many songs have been used as anthems for protocolary purposes. Recently, Flower of Scotland is the one most often used in sporting events.

Flower of Scotland

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see your like again
That fought and died for
Your wee bit hill and glen.
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's army,
And sent him homeward
To think again.

The Irish case is interesting. The Soldier's Song is the official anthem of the Republic of Ireland, while God Save The Queen represents Northern Ireland. Since the Irish Rugby Union did not separate in two after Irish Independence like most other sport federations (see football), both anthems were played before matches to represent players from both Eire and Northern Ireland. In 1995, the Irish Rugby Union decided to order a special all-island anthem, and thus Ireland's Call was born. In matches played in the Republic of Ireland, both the Soldier's Song and Ireland's Call are played. In matches abroad, only Ireland's Call is played.

Here is a memorable rendition of both anthems before the iconic game against England at Croke Park in 2007.

Amhrán na bhFiann (Soldier's Song)

and

Ireland's Call

Amhrán na bhFiann

Sinne Fianna Fáil,
atá faoi gheall ag Éirinn,
Buíon dár slua
thar toinn do ráinig chughainn,
Faoi mhóid bheith saor
Seantír ár sinsear feasta,
Ní fhágfar faoin tíorán ná faoin tráill.
Anocht a théam sa bhearna baoil,
Le gean ar Ghaeil, chun báis nó saoil,
Le gunna scréach faoi lámhach na bpiléar,
Seo libh canaig amhrán na bhfiann

Ireland's Call

Come the day and come the hour
Come the power and the glory
We have come to answer
Our Country's call
From the four proud provinces of Ireland

Ireland, Ireland
Together standing tall
Shoulder to shoulder
We'll answer Ireland's call

Re: Favourite National Anthems

Scotland might be my favorite, but I love all the celtic ones. Including Bretagne:

Bro gozh ma zadoù

Slovakia is another favorite:

Out of the big countries it must be Russia, ofcourse, extremly powerful and an alltime classic. Everyone has heard that one I belive.

All things are subject to interpretation whichever interpretation prevails at a given time is a function of power and not truth.

Das Lied der Deutschen.

For some reason I like this Italian national anthem version:

Re: Favourite National Anthems

Sure as hell, there has already been a national anthem thread on these boards but well.

Obviously, the USSR national anthem, performed by the Red Army Choir (and I have no moral lesson to be taught about communism, it's just music).

And those which I like because of the sympathy I have for the people and the regime:

Ireland's Call and the Marche d'Henri IV (French Monarchy anthem - Bourbons):

This is from Tchaikovsky's Spyashchaya krasavitsa

Vive Henri quatre
Vive ce Roi vaillant
Ce diable à quatre
A le triple talent
chorus
De boire et de battre
Et d'être un vers galant
De boire et de battre
Et d'être un vers galant

Au diable guerres
Rancunes et partis
Commes nos pères
Chantons en vrais amis
chorus
Au choc des verres
Les roses et les lys
Au choc des verres
Les roses et les lys

Chantons l'antienne
Qu'on chant'ra dans mille ans
Que Dieu maintienne
En paix ses descendants
chorus
Jusqu'à c'e qu'on prenne
La lune avec les dents
Jusqu'à c'e qu'on prenne
La lune avec les dents

Vive la France
Vive le roi Henri
Qu'à Reims on danse
En disant comme Paris
chorus
Vive la France
Vive le roi Henri
Vive la France
Vive le roi Henri

Roughly translated into English, this becomes:

Long live Henry IV
Long live this valiant king
This fourfold devil
With the three talents
Of drinking, fighting
And womanising

To hell with wars
And enmity, and spouses
Let us all together
Sing as true friends
Clink the glasses
The roses and the lilies

Let us sing the refrain
That we will sing in a thousand years:
May God maintain
His descendants in peace
Until we take the moon with our teeth (i.e. achieve the impossible)

Long live France
Long live King Henry
To Reims we dance
Singing as they do in Paris
Long live France
Long live King Henry

Oh and I was about to forget about the joyful Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika

Re: Favourite National Anthems

I love the Mexican and Uruguayan national anthems. They are both so beautiful and rousing.

Mexicanos, al grito de guerra (Mexicans, at the cry of war):

I was very lucky to be at Estadio Azteca for this match, the 2011 sub-17 world cup final against Uruguay, an absolutely amazing atmosphere.

Orientales, la Patria o la Tumba (Orientals, the Fatherland or the grave):

By all means, show it to me. I searched and found none. I hope you're not referring to this one, which deals with unofficial anthems: Real National Anthems

Bro gozh ma zadoù is a rip-off of the Welsh anthem though. Same music, even the same title.

Re: The Best National Anthem...?

Germany, then South Africa, France and Italy. I don't mind the Czechs one, very peaceful, Chile, Uruguay, Canada, Poland, Ukraine, Portugal all good anthems.

Dislike England and Liechtenstein's the most. Easily. Not a fan of Spain's either.

I really like Flower of Scotland. Full song has 4 verses (4th is the repeat of the first) and the third verse also gets sung, while the second is skipped.

Those days are past now
And in the past they must remain
But we can still rise now
And be the nation again!
That stood against him
Proud Edward's army
And sent him homeward
To think again.

It also has certain add-ons.
