Re: Adios caudillos, aka Fidel Castro resigns of presidency

I thought I would be jubilant when this day arrived. But I"m not, because for the 11 million Cubans that wake up today, nothing much will have changed in the daily struggle to put food on the table. There is still a long way to go.
Fidel had his last kick in the groin for Cubans by putting his resignation on the Internet - which he does not allow Cubans to see.

Sooner or later communism will be hsitory in Cuba and the truth about the regime will come out. Just like the truth about East Germany came out.

Good riddance I guess but I suspect he will still wield plenty of power until he dies. Maybe when that happens, communism will finally crumble in Cuba

Re: Adios caudillos, aka Fidel Castro resigns of presidency

They said that Fidel was the brain of the revolution, Che Guevara was its heart and RaulCastro is its fist. Doesn't bode well for the Cubans, but well, Beria became a liberal after Stalin's death, so we'll see

This was on the cards to be honest, he hasn't been well for a long time now
But while the Castros are still there I can't see there being much change in Cuba

I wouldn't say caudillismo is dead, maybe somewhat in Cuba, however it is alive and thriving in Venezuela.

Nothing will change. He'll still be there behind his brother.

Re: Adios caudillos, aka Fidel Castro resigns of presidency

This was inevitable. As everyone's already said, his brother will take over where Fidel left off. But you've still gotta wonder, Raul is getting old too, who would be likely to succeed Raul? It will be interesting to see whether Cuba undertakes reforms, a counter-revolution or what after Raul's reign ends. Europe is apparently willing to lift some of it's embargo's on Cuban trade, but the US isn't willing to deal with Raul at all, according to Australian media.

I actually think his brother is even worst than him. So I don't see Cuba changing any time soon.

Re: Adios caudillos, aka Fidel Castro resigns of presidency

Good riddance, hopefully the 20th century inheritance of the Lenin-style central planning socialism will soon be a thing of the past, an ideology that actually resulted in worsening human welfare in the countries that were unlucky enough to try implementing it. I hope for the best for Cuba's people.

Back to the days of a mafia playground, funny how names and faces change, but a lot of things don't.

On Nadal bumping him on the changeover, Rosol said: "It's ok, he wanted to take my concentration; I knew he would try something".

Wilander on Dimitrov - "He has mind set on imitating Federer and yes it looks good. But he has no idea what to do on the court".
