Gay marriage for a day in Iowa

This is a step in the right direction:

Gay couple in Iowa marries

But judge puts hold on other weddings

September 1, 2007

ASSOCIATED PRESS

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Sean Fritz snapped his cell phone shut Friday and turned to his partner. He shouted an address and sprinted toward a car.

"Let's go."

The race to get married was on. If he and Tim McQuillan were going to say "I do," it had to be done before a judge issued a stay of his hours-old order tossing out Iowa's ban on same-sex marriage.
With a few relatives gathered on the front lawn of the Rev. Mark Stringer, they were married.

"This is a legal document and you are married," said Stringer, a pastor of the First Unitarian Church of Des Moines.

The Ames men kissed and hugged. "This is it. We're married. I love you," Fritz told McQuillan. But it became official only after they got the completed license to the courthouse.

Just two hours after the ceremony, the window of opportunity closed when District Court Judge Robert Hanson issued a stay of his Thursday order, halting the acceptance of same-sex marriage license applications while the case is appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court.

That left Fritz and McQuillan as the only same-sex couple legally wed in Iowa on Friday.

No more same-sex marriages will be recognized, and no more applications accepted, pending the county's appeal of Hanson's ruling, County Attorney John Sarcone said. Hanson, ruling in a case filed by six same-sex couples who were denied marriage licenses in 2005, declared the law unconstitutional Thursday.

The marriage license approval process normally takes three business days, but Fritz and McQuillan took advantage of a loophole that allows couples to skip the waiting period if they pay $5 and get a judge to sign a waiver.

Other couples, even those who got an early start Friday, were out of luck. Katy Farlow and Larissa Boeck, students at Iowa State University, got their application in but didn't get their license.

The flurry of activity in the courts prompted a quick response from some lawmakers. House Republican leader Christopher Rants called on Democrats, who hold a majority of seats in the Legislature, to respond.

"The Democrats should call a special session immediately to take up such issues and to introduce a marriage amendment for Iowa's constitution," he said.

in that case he's pretty dumb

i can see the advantages of casual sex with strangers - but in a toilet along with being a senator..... it would be such a turn off if someone was taking a dump in the next cubicle, unless thats his kind of thing

You'd think that people would realize how much money could flow into the economy with gay marriage being legalized.

What would Anderson say?

No, he is married to a woman already (he married one of his office people) and adopted her 3 children.

He would be in trouble for bigamy as well as soliciting.

No, it was senator Craig. I consider wheather he will marry this policeman or not. It would be very nice of him.
Besides it is not the first republican, who of this type. It seems that many of these people are usual scum or maybe unusual scum. It was given in american TV. Some examples: a republican, who was involved in illegal weapon trade, other republican, who traded in cocaine, the next republican, who glorified family life having 10 mistress on the side. An of course on the top their big chef: alcoholic and genocide in one person. Are american values? Killing of people and diverse crimes.

The policeman was far from being handsome. He was a crook who wanted his 15 min. fame. As for the senatior he did the right thing to resign. Just like the Democrat New Jersey governor who had his own experience that came out. He too was given the boot.

Glad to see you find men handsome though.

Life is empty and meaningless. It is in emptiness that we create possibilities for extraordinary results

Re: Gay marriage for a day in Iowa

There are lots of expenses related to weddings. People spend tons of money on lots of things for them, so yes, it would be a benefit to the economy.

But it would also hurt governmental income because married couples pay less in taxes. We should get rid of that. And if we don't, then they need to make gay marriage legal because it violates the equal protection laws to force people to pay two different levels of taxation.

Just as we are not pleased that foreigners would use these few examples to define all Americans, I'm sure Poles are horrified at the thought that we might use you as an example to define all Poles.

More money for lawyers, accountants, estate planners, tax people and on and on.

Here in MA, Fed. gov't doesn't recognize marriage, of course, but state does. I believe it results in having to fill out a "dummy" Fed. return in order to complete the state return. Complicated.

There have also been divorces. More money to be made there, as well.

Many Poles are worst that I am. I am not the worst Pole in the world.
Besides there are not few examples. How do you think? Are your politicians so dirty and corrupted? And nation is clean and wonderful. It is total bs. And nobody from your clean, naive nation known it by the vote that something is wrong? Maybe your nation knew it and it satisfies your people ( killing of people, tortures, violance, lawlessness, harming of others). That's why this man, who destroyed 2 states, decimated people there won elections for 2 terms of office. Your nation is not so holly as you think of yourselves. Besides nobody in this world think that you are good people. What good did you do exactly? Nothing.
