Read an article on the Economist a month back or so that UAE has a huge public deficit... IMO this whole Dubai thing may turn out to be a bust, it's hard to intentionally try to create popular tourist attractions.

Only Del Potro can take him out before the semis, and he won't. Nadal is winning the AO, bet your house on it.

due to the finance crisis. but that's a world wide problem.

but the same goes to america. i wonder if they will finish the freedom tower before 2020.

in tokyo they have started a 600+ m tower.

all the projects got started before the finance crisis.

Well I think it's smart to try to come up new ways of making money besides oil. But still, there have been cultural clashes in Dubai, e.g. from what I understand homosexuality is still not tolerated. A while back some British couple got sentenced to 3 months in prison for allegedly having sex in public, though they changed the sentence to a lifetime ban from coming to Dubai (not sure about the details ).

But still, I think it is difficult to create these things by trying. Naturally corporations come up with innovations nowadays all the time, but the most succesful innovations are collaborations between the users and developers and they become succesful by sort of accident, e.g. Facebook. Course, this suits better for technical innovations but I feel there is a sign of what is to become of products, tourism is a product (a service) as well.

Many of the New York's biggest landmarks were built during Great Depression...

Empire State Building was long known as "Empty State Building".

Re: Burj Dubai tops out at 818 m

I have lived in Dubai as a child for 3 years and the entire economy is run by non Arabs who don't have any rights. The ratio of Arabs to non Arabs is like 1:10. There are lots of restrictions on people's personal lives but the entire economy is very profitable not because of oil but because of zero taxes and zero regulation. You get to keep whatever you earn. Though Dubai has no almost oil of its own a lot of its relentless construction is financed by the oil money of neighboring Abu Dhabi. The tourism industry does very well in Dubai as it is comparatively liberal to the rest of the Arab world. Plus it has the world's cheapest goods because it has zero taxes.

Sure, it's the Keynesian idea. Pretty smart as well. My only concern is, will it pay off?
(not sure about the adjective . What I mean is that it is John Maynard Keynes' idea or principle)

14 visitors trapped in Burj Khalifa elevator
The group, which included a child, found themselves stuck at a height of 430m en-route to the observatory deck which is located on the 124th floor.

Fourteen visitors to the At the Top observatory deck in Burj Khalifa were trapped for an hour in the elevator on Saturday.

The group, which included a child, found themselves stuck at a height of 430m en-route to the observatory deck which is located on the 124th floor.

The temporary freeze also led to delays for visitors waiting on the ground level where entry is controlled by 30 minute intervals to ensure there is no overcrowding at the lifts and at the deck.

A spokesperson from Emaar Properties issued a statement saying. "The elevator of At the Top was briefly stalled and operations were resumed soon after. Visitors were safely transported to level 124. The safety of our guests is of paramount importance and all elevators in Burj Khalifa are tested and function to the highest safety standards."

The elevators have capacity to hold up to 14 people and travel at 10 metres per second from the ground level to the 124th floor in less than 60 seconds. Some have been programmed to permit controlled evacuations for fires or security reasons.

The Burj Khalifa’s observatory deck has been operational from the 5th January 3pm. Since then, visitors have flocked to Dubai Mall’s latest attraction leading to a sell out of tickets. Visitors are advised to book in advance.

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

Who cares about this crap anyway, that building will one day disintegrate and become sand in the desert again as it should. That will be Burj Dubai's greatest service to mankind.

What's wrong with man doing new and innovative things? For me the building is a wonder. I would like to go to the top.

Its just a building, but I never knew they could build so tall, reminds me Sin City arcologies, maybe this could bring innovations such as vertical cities like that in the future.
