Open 13? Why is it called that?

Why not call it Open #1?

It's like they're acknowledging this a little tourney.

Re: Open 13? Why is it called that?

Because of the main sponsor Conseil Général des Bouches-du-Rhône, which must be like the tourism office for the region of Bouches-du-Rhône.

Re: Open 13? Why is it called that?

They're quite an arrogant company to think that only the number 13 signifies them.

Hummm..no
I live in Marseille and I know : the tournament takes place in the district of Bouches du Rhone, and in France the Bouches du Rhone have the number 13...Paris has the number 75 for example...it's also the number used in the immatriculation of the cars

This illustrates what John John said :

The 13 in Open 13 de Marseille means nothing else.

Re: Open 13? Why is it called that?

so , as above reason

why don't calling this tournament "Marseille Open"
i think it should be more appropriate

International tennis viewer doesn't care how French register their cars or numbering their city

Re: Open 13? Why is it called that?

yes but the Conseil General is called "13" in our district, and it's the main sponsor of the tournament

Tennis fans generally do call it "Marseille" or the "Marseille Open" (if you read any British media, the "Marseilles Open"), because it's the more permanent name. Most tournaments have a sponsored name too, which is liable to change frequently and confuse us, and that's the name that's naturally used on the marketing and website.

I don't see any problem in it being called "Open 13". There are worse examples, such as the Stockholm tournament, which has been called "IF" (name of an insurance company) for the last few years.
