During Hopman Cup coverage last night Fred Stolle said the courts were quicker than last year but the ball is still bouncing higher. What I've read on other tennis websites is that 2006 courts were much slower than normal and 2007 will be closer to how they were pre-2006. I'm not sure how much of a factor the weather will be though.

From Melbourne's Herald Sun:

Roger's here, throttle Open

The world's greatest tennis players have begun their march to Melbourne as ticket sales for the Australian Open gain pace. Defending champion Roger Federer landed about 7am yesterday on Emirates flight from his Dubai training base. The world no. 1 told the Herald Sun he was confident of capturing a third Australian crown.

"I feel pretty good," Federer said. "It's the start of the year and you never know what is going to happen. I had a good off season so I am feeling good about my chances."

The peerless Swiss was flanked by long-time girlfriend and manager Miroslava Vavrinec. Federer, 25, chose to skip the Qatar ATP tournament for an earlier Melbourne warm-up.

"(Coach) Tony Roche arrives tomorrow, so we can start practising from tomorrow," he said.

But just hours later the perfectionist had changed his mind, becoming the first Open contender to practise on the freshly laid Rebound Ace surface at Rod Laver Arena. He had a one-hour hit-up with former player Vavrinec, and then a massage.

Federer will lead a quality eight-man field into next week's Kooyong AAMI Classic.

Re: ***2007 Australian Open Thread***

when's the last time we've seen Roger wear a backwards cap? I think I like it

So the courts are "faster" but the ball bounces "higher" than last year, or it bounces just as high?

He didn't say it was bouncing higher, just pointing out that even though they supposedly are quicker than last year the ball still bounces high.

This is totally but I read that Justine Henin-Hardenne has withdrawn from AO for "personal reasons". She's not my favorite on the womens side, but I do think she's the most talented.

She withdrew from both. She's going to release a statement tomorrow. She's definately one of the best out there. I hope it's not too bad.

According to Matt Cronin's website Justine's coach Carlos called the WTA a circus, a lie and that many players are hypocrites who 'screw with his player'. Also goes off on Kim Clijsters and Justine's dad. It will be interesting to see what the reason for her withdrawl is.

Yeah, last year it was really ugly tennis,I think it was Kiefer who hit the highest # of aces, sth like 60 for the tourney

She's covering the court well though

The speculations of her environment (and of the local press in Belgium) are that there are serious marital problems with Pierre-Yves
