Federer's BH and return during MIAMI...

Have simply been on. He has been hitting his deep CC BH topspin shot to get short or medium replies which he runs around to hit his FH DTL and then come to net. He has won several points this way.

His flat BH DTL has been excellent and he won many points against James Blake with this shot. He even hit an amazing BH DTL winner with the ball about 12 inches off of the court and near the service line.

On the returns, it has been more hit and miss, but he has been a lot more aggressive with the returns. He has tried to hit big returns a lot more often compared with other matches I have seen him.

It's amazing that he is actually working on his game during ATP level matches agaisnt top 10 players but that is what he is doing.

He said himself his backhand improved a lot thanks to his colleagues, who keep playing to it...

His Bh was always great but just got more consistent.

Re: Federer's BH and return during MIAMI...

As I said in my "Improvements in Fed's game in 2006", he has definitely worked on his BH DTL and improving his 2nd serve. He uses his BH DTL a lot more nowadays. I think he specifically improved that shot so that he could be more effective against Nadal.

Need ideas for a new signature...

His backhand has never been great before. Not only was it inconsistent, he could NOT hit the CC topspin deep to his opponent's BH (or FH if you are a lefty) at all really, and he could barely hit the BH DTL.

Even if you go back to 2004, he never pushed ANYONE around with his BH. He would get hot with it once in a while, but he wouldn't push people around with it. Now he is.

I have plenty of matches of his on tape to prove you wrong from 04 but whatever. Ninja is super strong on both sides and wins most of the time.

^Federer of right now could beat Federer of 2004 pretty handily I think. In any case, keep it going Fed!

What a match: Roger versus Roger. I'd love to see that.

Well, they do say that the only one who can stop Roger Federer is Roger Federer

That's not what I meant, though. I don't like this invincibility-talk, I just imagined a match between an inspired, but somehow instable and a fighting, mentally mature Roger, very interesting to see.

Not sure about that, 2004 was his master piece, he didn't have much to defend and his serve was a deadly gun at disposal. He passed a lot we the BH. Now he seems to regain top form and that sounds great for Roland Garros. We are lucky as Fed fans to have such a consistent champ, really.

"I asked a bloke in the front row if he liked the serve-and-volley stuff," said Rafter. "He said he did but asked if he was going to get to see any rallies. 'Not today, mate,' I told him."

Re: Federer's BH and return during MIAMI...

This doesn't really belong in this thread, but I don't know where else to put it. I was watching some slow-mo video of Roger the other day and it's amazing how he never takes his eye off the ball. He doesn't look up/forward until well after the ball has left his racquet. I don't see that as much with other players. JMac commented on that during Wimbledon last year, that Roger follows the ball all the way to the racquet whereas a lot of other players look up (example in the photos below). Another amazing thing (to me at least) is how Roger never really seems to look out of place or ackward on court. Compare that with pics of Pandy or whoever and it's night and day.
