Re: Players' Comment on Roger

Considering it is troll boom season, maybe we can petition to the webmaster for a new forum for misyou & hh so they have a place to discuss their love for Rogi instead of doing that here

Re: Players' Comment on Roger

Great read --- McEnroe on Roger today:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/3827877.stm
McEnroe: Federer can be the greatest

By John McEnroe
BBC Sport expert at Wimbledon

Roger Federer has the potential to be the best player who ever lived.

That might sound like a big thing to say, but I see him as having the ability to be that dominant.

Against Alex Bogdanovic on Monday he was never really tested.

It was a tough match-up for Alex and he hardly got himself into the sort of position to make Federer sweat.

Federer is filled with confidence at the moment. He's the reigning champion, he won the Australian Open and everything is going the way he wanted it.

His only shaky point all year was the French Open, but that doesn't change my opinion of him.

He's not up to the same level as Pete Sampras yet in terms of titles won, but he has every shot in the game, plus the power and calmness under pressure to back it up.

He's even inventing shots. That forehand half-volley he hits with power is a phenomenal shot - he makes it look too easy.

Every shot he hits looks easy, to be honest. He doesn't even seem to be trying.

I like all his shots but his forehand is my favourite.

He has so much variety with it. He can whip over it and win points from the baseline, or he can punch through it close to the net.

He has very quick feet, so he can get in position to play the shot he chooses, and his balance is perfect.

He can almost hold the ball on his racquet head because his wrists are so much stronger than the average person's. - use wrist more than average person.

Very few people can hit his kind of shot.

He's my pick to win Wimbledon - of course he is.

Tennis is just fun for him right now.

Interesting, didn't know about the wrist part. Thanks a lot for the article, Mitalidas.

But I guess it is normal seeing as how much spins he gets on the ball.

I'm glad you mentioned that, I have to say it sounded like it was being written off the cuff, basically like someone was commentating rather than sit down and write a thoughtful article

btw- john wasn't covering on ESPN - so where was this telecast (anywhere that is shown in the US?)

Re: Players' Comment on Roger

John really believes in Federer and though he says people may think he is going over the top about him being the greatest ever it still is nice to hear someone believe in him as much as he does. He probably has more belief in him than Roger himself does on his own, but it is good to hear that. Only time will tell.

"The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work."

Go Federer, Nadal!!!

Re: Players' Comment on Roger

From Johnny Mac:

While Agassi has a future is calling the shots, McEnroe said he's enjoying watching Roger Federer hit the shots. The man who ended five-time Wimbledon champion's Bjorn Borg's reign on grass said Federer may be the most complete player he's seen.

"I like all his shots — he doesn't seem to have a weakness," McEnroe said of Federer. "If he has any weakness, they called this a weakness with Sampras at one time, it seems he's not sort of totally into it. That unflappability that can be genius when you're playing well can be called lackadaisical when he's not going well. There's no shot he hits that isn't well struck. He's got every shot imaginable."

And the Swiss stylist owns a few shots that are incomprehensible.

"What he can do is generate racquet head speed with his forehand, which very few players can do," McEnroe said. "Roddick hits his forehand as hard or harder and there's a couple guys out there that hit really hard forehands, but the speed at which he's able to move through the ball and hit it flat through the ball, but also get some spin is phenomenal. When he played Roddick last year, I think it was set point in the second set, he hit a half volley that was as hard as I've ever seen a half volley hit. It seemed to be totally effortless and he hit it with a phenomenal amount of pace. I didn't think that shot existed. That's not easy to invent a shot. Sampras was the last guy to do it with that scissor kick overhead. Pretty much all the shots are out there. He's got it all . He does have a chance to be one of the greatest players who ever lived, no doubt. He's got a chance to win a lot of major titles."

-------------------------------------------------

And you know, talking about spin, when I was watching Rogi's match against Alex this Monday, I could actually see, hear, and feel the spin off his forehands. It is so insane. I wish I will be seeing more of that.

I definitely have to tune up my tv volume in the next match

But amazingly Rogi has made me pick up my tennis racquets again after few years break coz he made it seems so simple, easy and fun and just can't help feeling like hey, that's nice I want to play that shot too...yeah right, simple

I am serious. Like, the sound from his racket hitting the ball is just different.

I hope he's still going to the Bangkok Open in September. If he is, I'll try to go for sure, with Air Asia now, it's very cheap flying there besides I have many friends in Bangkok

I'll love to go back Melbourne for AO in maybe year after next, miss it there and Shanghai TMC will be in my plan too

But of course, at this moment, it's all just "plan"
