Baghdatis scares me

I know this thread is a little premature, since Fed/Kiefer hasn't been played yet. If Kiefer goes through , then I'm all for Marcos taking it to him in the final and winning the whole thing - I've jumped firmly onto his crowded bandwagon.

However, if Roger wins, I'm really nervous for him - I can't help comparing a Fed/Baggy final to Safin/Sampras USO 2000. Two talented 20 year olds reaching the final of a GS against the overwhelming favourite with nothing to lose...

I know Federer doesn't take his opponents lightly, but none of his matches are a foregone conclusion. For what it's worth, with the way he's been pushed in his last two matches, I'm concerned about the SF as well - I really hope he's on form for this one.

Thoughts anyone? Does a Baghdatis/Federer final scare you as well?

Go Roger!

Re: Baghdatis scares me

Baggy - Portrait of a Young Champion - @20, long before he's fit enough not to tire after 2-3 sets, his record in 5-setters is 6-0!!

given the deteriorating condition of Roger's feet, and his mental fatigue which he mentioned at end of last yr & was Very Obvious in Davy match, Baggy is a major threat. Like Roger he's a momentum player, so it's a dream final. W/a 50-50% chance of Roger prevailing. But Roger Really wants this - so if his feet permit, he should take it.

don't forget that Baggy will be playing unseeded @IW & Miami as well....

Re: Baghdatis scares me

No no no...
Rog will win the AO.
Young guys challenging him is nothing new,
and I am sure SURE that he will be able to handle it this time as well.
He's not that old himself, by the way.

Re: Baghdatis scares me

I think the match against Kiefer will be really important. Roger needs to play well here to set himself a good tempo going into the final, as well as saving some more energy in case the final goes to 4/5 sets.

There is no info, if there was someone would've posted it here. Some people are just obsessed about his feet.

Re: Baghdatis scares me

I am always scared about every opponent because I never take anything for granted. I think a lot of people haven't noticed how well Baghdatis plays and the fact that he has an all court game and can volley and drop shot well. The first time I saw him play in 2004 they were saying his game is a lot like Federer's. So yes, I think Baghdatis could be dangerous to Roger. Baghdatis has a higher Ace count in the tournament than Roger. Baghdatis seems not to be a choker and he is able to figure out how to change strategies in the middle of a match if he has too.

Roger Forever !

I think Baghadatis is dangerous.....but remember that Roger is 3-0 over him and Roger just beat him in straights in Doha. Granted the conditions in Doha are much more dry and the court is not rebound Ace it's a regular fast hardcourt.

That said, Baghdatis will probably play his heart out because this is his first major and he's had quite a run beating players people expected him to lose to.

Roger's feet are fine now. He looks very fit. Another thing that crosses my mind is that Roger has never been beaten in a Major final. That record could be on his mind and if he does get caught up in thinking about that it could hurt him from playing freely without fear. Now this kind of thing crosses my mind, but I hope Roger as a pro and a true champion Roger is far beyond getting caught up in thinking about records during a match. What ever happens at least Roger isn't gonig to lose any ranking points.

I will be sending him good vibes during the SF and hopefully the Final. Let's hope our worry was for nothing.

Roger Forever !

Re: Baghdatis scares me

I'm a bit concerned about the match with Kiefer - he's a difficult customer (in more ways than his tennis!) and Roger will have to up his standard and hang tough if he is to win. And if it is the final everyone is expecting - I just cannot comprehend Roger allowing himself to lose in a Slam final to an unseeded player ... his brain will not compute it!!

I am not forgetting about Kiefer either. I think the biggest mistake is to ever take a match for granted.

Yes too true and if he can take a set off Roger on grass .... but I do expect Roger to come through. I won't be able to see the match tomorrow (but will be recording it for viewing in the evening) so can only watch the livescores when I get to the office an hour or so later. I will take a deep breath and hope to see Rogi on a smooth path to victory so that I can concentrate on my work!!

Re: Baghdatis scares me

I love Baghdatis ever since I saw followed the documentary eurosport had following him around as a youngster in challengers and not quite getting the good results, but even so always in a good spirit and alot of charisma. He reminds me so much of a 20 year old Guga Kuerten in 97 where he beat all kind of big legends in his way to the final and had that same charismatic personality and always smiling on the court.

I do admit I never thought of BAghdatis as one of the young guys with potential and I am really surprised how he has played these 2 weeks. HE has truly become one of my big favorites.

However, Federer wont do any mistake in the final and I think the fairytale will end this time atleast. Federer 2006 is not Sampras 2000, neither Brugera 97, he still is young, hungry to improve and I think he has his best time ahead of him.

Prediction for the rest of the decade:
Federer winner: Usopen 05, 06, 07, 09 Aopen:06, 07, 10 Roland GArros:06, 08 Wimbledon:05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10 (Roddick always runner up)
Safin winner: Aopen 08 Gasquet winner: USopen 08, Aopen 09, RG: 10
Nadal winner: RG 07 Monfils winner: USopen 10
Guga winner: RG 2010
Roddick and Hewitt together winner of: 3 sidney, 4 Adelaide, 3 washington, 3 san jose, 3 indianapolis, 2 houston, 2 memphis, 5 queens and one master series title (where Safin, Agassi, Federer and Nadal happens to all be injured).
