Let's hope Roger repeats and wins the title here.
YOUNG FRENCHMAN TAKES 8TH SPOT IN AAMI CLASSIC FIELD
GAEL MONFILS (ranked 39) has accepted the eighth and final spot in the 2006 AAMI Classic at Kooyong (Jan. 11-14).
The promising 193 cm nineteen year old from Paris joins the esteemed company of ROGER FEDERER, ANDY RODDICK, ANDRE AGASSI, IVAN LJUBICIC, DAVID NALBANDIAN, GUILLERMO CORIA and TOMMY HAAS in the elite eight man line-up.
Monfils, presently the third ranked French player, won his first ATP title this year in Sopot, was a finalist in Lyon and Metz and also won two Challenger tournaments in Besancon and Tunis. One of the biggest improvers on the ATP Tour in ‘05, Monfils starred in junior ranks and is sure to thrill the Kooyong crowds with his exciting style of play.
Tournament Director, Colin Stubs, who likes to add a rising young “rookie” to his field, said today: “Gael is a very talented young player. I am convinced that he will perform well in illustrious company. He may even do some damage”.
The AAMI Classic kicks off on Wednesday, January 11, with all eight players taking to Kooyong’s famed centre court. Ticket sales continue to exceed expectations and a sell-out of corporate facilities is anticipated.
Play begins at 11.00 am Wednesday to Friday (Jan. 11-13), with the finals on Saturday (Jan. 14) starting at 12.30 pm.
