Roger Adds IMG To His Team

Monday September 19, 10:09 am ET

BASEL, Switzerland & CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 19, 2005--Roger Federer, the #1 tennis player in the world and winner of this year's U.S. Open Men's Singles Championship, has expanded his business team by adding IMG, the world's largest sports marketing and management agency, to capitalize on his global business opportunities.

With his sixth major title, back-to-back U.S. Opens, three straight Wimbledon victories, and one Australian Open, the 24-year-old is already proclaimed by many as the greatest male tennis player in history - including by Andre Agassi, whom he defeated in Sunday's final. His success, combined with the global reach of tennis, has expanded his worldwide marketing needs. Now IMG joins Roger's management team. "It is definitely an ideal situation," Roger Federer emphasizes. "I continue to work with my team and can use the advantages of both the existing lean structure and a worldwide network at the same time.

"I met with IMG's new owner and chairman, Ted Forstmann, and learned about his vision for IMG going forward and the team he proposed for me at IMG. I liked what he had to say in terms of business ideas and also have found a common ground with Ted in terms of our charitable efforts in addressing children's issues, especially in Africa," Federer says. "We hope this partnership can take us to the next level."

"Roger is an international superstar on and off the court and has emerged as a global icon," Forstmann says. "He is an extraordinarily bright, polite, thoughtful young man and, as a result, I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with him both on his business and philanthropic efforts throughout the world."

With Each Match, Federer Sets More Records: Won this year's U.S. Open for Second Consecutive Year, Last Three Wimbledon Championships, 23 of Last 23 Finals

Born August 8, 1981, in Basel, Switzerland, Federer lives in nearby Oberwil. He turned pro in 1998 and has set numerous records and established new standards for his sport ever since. The international superstar is not only celebrated for his victories, but also for his style and grace on and off the tennis court. He won the 2005 Laureus World Sportsman of the Year Award. However, his interests and goals go beyond tennis. In 2003, he created the Roger Federer Foundation which supports disadvantaged children in South Africa and promotes sport for young people. He has become a global ambassador for tennis and sports, and in November 2004, was on hand at United Nations in New York to announce 2005 as "International Year of Sport and Physical Education" together with U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and Adolf Ogi, former President of Switzerland. Roger Federer carried Switzerland's flag at the 2004 Olympic Games.

The U.S. Open, his sixth Grand Slam, was Federer's 10th title of the season and his 23rd consecutive victory in a final stretching back to October 2003. He won 11 tournaments in 2004, another record. Federer now has won 32 career titles; second most among active players behind Agassi's 60. He is the first man in almost 70 years to win both Wimbledon and the US Open in consecutive years equaling Don Budge in 1937-1938. The U.S. Open victory also topped a record set by one of his idols, Pete Sampras, as he won his 35th consecutive victory on hard courts - topping Sampras' record of 34 - and improved his hard court record in 2005 to an ATP-best 45-1. He also extends his win-loss record this season to 71-3.

With his six Grand Slam titles in just three years, Federer is clearly among the elite in tennis history. He has tied his boyhood idols, Boris Becker and Stefan Edberg, among Open Era players; he is one behind John McEnroe and Mats Wilander, two behind Agassi, Jimmy Connors and Ivan Lendl, and five behind Bjorn Borg. Sampras holds the record with 14.

Re: Roger Adds IMG To His Team

i'm not sure what to think of this, on the one hand it'll be good have more publicity for roger, it's amazing for how much he's accomplished how relatively unknown he is and hey as long as you're going to be famous you might as well milk it for all it's worth. athough on the other hand it worries me a little bit, one of the things i like best about roger is that he keeps things so simple and authentic and i hope he doesn't get all caught up in the media machine. hmm i guess we'll see what this brings.

Re: Roger Adds IMG To His Team

I'm sure Roger thought long and hard about this before he made the decision. Perhaps it was just too stressful on the existing team (especially Mirka). Maybe they realized that they need a bigger company like IMG to turn Roger into a global brand and to get him the recognition he truly deserves. I don't think it will change him - if becoming #1 and winning 6 grand slams hasn't I don't think this will.

Re: Roger Adds IMG To His Team

Also the headline on IMG's website is: Roger Federer Adds IMG To His Team

And Roger said: “We hope this partnership can take us to the next level.” So it sounds to me like IMG isn't really taking over, but working with RF Management. My guess is that Roger will still be calling the shots.

Re: Roger Adds IMG To His Team

Rogi will handle work with IMG well.
I think that it's a nice decision for them(Rogi and Mirka) because Mirka was becoming busier recently than before I think.
They can have more their time.

Yeah, this could be very true. This will give Mirka more free time, and of course Roger always wanted more (private) time with Mirka, didn't he??

i agree that this will definitely help him establish his name as a global brand and finally get the recognition he deserves. i just always thought the idea of his small team was cute and refreshing, although no doubt stressful. i'm sure it'll all work out for the best, as long as they don't have him making any stupid ads like the sampras ones

Re: Roger Adds IMG To His Team

I don't think they can force Roger to do anything he doesn't want to. At least I'm sure whatever the terms of the agreement were Roger still has final say. Of course none of us know why he decided to make this change. Could be a combination of things. Maybe he and his team realized that to really expand the Roger Federer brand they needed help, they couldn't do it on their own. Maybe someone told Roger he was selling himself short and he should be making a lot more than he is - which in turn could pump more into his charity. Maybe Mirka was getting fed up with it all and needed a break. Roger did say in his Vogue interview that if she was fed up with it she didn't have to do it, he just wanted her to be his girlfriend. In his New York Times interview he said he wished he had more [private] time for himself and Mirka. Also, we don't know the terms of the agreement. But from the press release it sounds like IMG will be working in partnership with Roger's existing team - RF Management - not taking over. So they'll probably just augment the current team and do the types of things his current team based in Switzerland can't handle. But I don't expect Roger to change, like giving less access to the press or becoming a big arrogant snob, ect.

I've always thought what a shame it is that the likes of Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Andy Roddick, ect. can make tens of millions off court, yet Roger one of the greatest players ever was probably making half that or even less. I know it's not all about money, but if they're raking in the millions, Roger should be too. And there are ways of getting endorsement money without having to do silly commercials. Plus not all commercials are silly. I've seen some Tiger Woods commercials that are quite good. The one that Nike did during the British Open was phenomenal. They super-imposed shots of Tiger playing golf as a kid onto the St. Andrews golf course so it looked like a little 5-year-old Tiger was playing in the British Open. He also did one for American Express where he played the Bill Murray character from the movie Caddy Shack. It was hilarious.

So who knows what Roger and IMG will do together, but I think only good can come of it. Because Roger's a smart guy, has a good head on his shoulders. He's not going to do something that will make him look stupid or silly.

Re: Roger Adds IMG To His Team

One other thing I noticed in the press release is it said "Roger Federer Adds IMG To His Team", not "Roger Federer signs with IMG", or "IMG adds tennis superstar Roger Federer to it's roster" like they do with other stars. Also in the press release it said: "Now IMG joins Roger’s management team" and Roger said: “I continue to work with my team and can use the advantages of both the existing lean structure and a worldwide network at the same time.”

To me that headline/press release reads: Roger's running the show, not the other way around. And he's not stupid and proved he can do it on his own so they won't jerk him around.
