Titles on all surfaces in the same year

I noticed a while back that Dirk mentioned Roger had now won titles on every surface for three years in a row, and wondered who else had done it. The answer is, just one. Here's the list of players who have won on every surface in the same calendar year:

Borg (77-80)
Federer (03-05)
Connors (72, 74, 78)
Nastase (72-73)
McEnroe (79, 84)
Wilander (83)
Lendl (89)
Stich (91)
Sampras (94)
Roddick (05)

But this is rather contentious, since my definition of "all four surfaces" is grass, clay, outdoor hard/carpet and indoor hard/carpet, due to the difference in playing conditions. If hard and carpet were considered to be entirely separate surfaces, then Sampras also won on every surface in 1998, in Philadelphia (indoor hard), Atlanta (clay), Wimbledon (grass) and Vienna (indoor carpet).

For more on this, see my insanely detailed thread here: The Great Big Super-Duper Title Resource Thread I list all the players who have won titles on every surface in the course of their career, including a particular journeyman who inhabits my avatar.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Sjengster noticed something I said that was positive. I do consider indoor hardcourts seperate because it is different and they are faster than most outside hardcourts.

ATP distinguishes their surfaces as,
Quote:
H = Hard court G = Grass court CL = Clay court IH = Indoor Hard IS = Indoor Synthetic
But, still quite a feat for Roger..

It does happen every once in a while.

Re: Titles on all surfaces in the same year

What Dirk described in his post.

As an addendum, here is where Roger stands in the overall winning % in finals: http://www.menstennisforums.com/show...33#post2095633

Not bad for someone who's about to turn 24, although I expect it will have gone down by the end of his career.
