Sorry for the delay.
So this is an interview from Saturday or Sunday in London, with both Stan and Roger. Very nice interview imo.
So here is a rough transcript:
Journalist: "So Roger, you call Stan Stanimal, so if he was an animal, what animal would he be?"
Roger: "a buffalo" (laughters)
Stan: "haha thanks Roger"
Roger: "is that good or not?"
Stan: "not so much, no..."
Roger: "ah ok, a bear then, something strong, something solid... But I don't call him like that on a daily basis, normally that is only Stanley. That's only when he's playing, and being very tough, playing very well, that I like to call him Stanimal"
Journalist: "and you Stan?"
Stan: "well, to me Roger would be a cat, or a panther, how he's moving on court, that's smooth, fast, beautiful."
Journalist: "So there's a lot expectations and fever
for the both of you in Switzerland, you're great ambassadors, is that something that you can feel?"
Roger: "well I don't know, at the end of the day we are only playing tennis, we are not there to change rules in the country, if we can inspire people through the sport then that is something very nice, if we can do that through tennis that is something quite unique and that's really nice to share that with Stan. Him more active on the French speaking part, me on the German speaking one".
Stan: "I am managing my career at my own pace, am trying to make the best with my qualities, and the past two years it's been more than very good for me, better than I ever expected".
Journalist: "Roger, does the fact that Stan won a slam made you relate more to Stan?"
Roger: "in a way yes, I know what it feels to win the AO or slams, or masters 1000, well not Monaco, I never won there, only Stan did (laughters), in that way we understand each other, I really felt super happy when Stan could win the AO, winning a slam is somehting that will last forever, that nobody can take away from you".
Stan: "I think it's more the year that go us getting closer, the fact that we are playing the davis cup, spending a lot of time together, the fact that I won a slam brought more discussion to the table, we could share more on special moments like this, we've always been very close but it even got us getting closer."
Journalist: "Roger, if you had to describe Stan, what would be his main quality, and his main flaw?"
Roger: "Hummm, well I think Stan is a guy that always takes two step forward and one step backward. He's always been driven this way. He's always improving, and when I think oh yes he's quite there then he takes that step backward, or stagnate, and when you think well not too sure how's Stan then he suprises by improving again. And I really that those past two years he really reached an incredible level, qhere that's him to decide
to win or lose, so to speak."
Stan: "For me it's clear that Roger is so easy to adapt to anything, on court to adapt to the opponent, but also how easy it is for him to give advices, to speak with everybody, other sportsmen can't manage to be that open, to share as much as he does."
Journalist: "Roger, what would you ask Stan if you were a journalist?"
Roger: "Maybe on his past, I don't exactly know all of his background, how it all started, why he went to Spain, and all those bollocks
(laughters) well no bollocks, my French is not that good (laughters). I would like to know more about this, since it's quite atypical. I remember I first saw him in the Swiss tennis center in Biel, never heard of that guy before, he was 16, I was 20, and I was like wow that guy plays do far behind the baseline, has such a good strong backhand, kind of a clay specialist, I was quite impressed."
Journalist: "Stan, what would you ask Roger?"
Stan: "well normally I always ask him the questions I want to ask, because for me it's quite a privilege to be close to him and to get his inputs, advices. What is fascinating with him and that's what I would want to ask him, is how he sometimes feels on court, how he manages to always look so easy, effortless. He never seems nervous, and as a player I know that's certainly not the case. So I would like really know how he feels when he's playing those big matches."
Journalist: "now please pick those tennis balls (there are tennis balls on the table with things written on them)"
Roger picks a ball with written "Jass" on it.
Roger: "ahhh jass, good I chose the good one (laughters)"
Stan: "no, not the good one for you (laughters)"
Roger" "why not the good one?"
Stan: "because we are world champions..."
Roger: "yes, true Stan is the world champion, teaming up with Seve, well we haven't played in quite a while but that's always very nice moments. It's always quite relaxed at the start and in the end it becomes more tense and in the end some don't speak to each other for a while after (laughters). No it's really funny moments and that's true that Stan in world champ with Seve... That's it unfortunately (laughters)".
Roger picks a second tennis ball.
Roger: "Olympic games. That's that, no?
Stan: "What, it's badly written or something?"
Roger: "no, but JO (French for OG) can also be Joe, or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or somehting (laughters). No, well I think we really were feeling like kids when we won it, we even messed around with the fire
scenes and stuff like that, not it was really something truly exceptional and amazing, in tennis we're most of the time alone, playing in singles and that was the ultimate dream and really I rate it as high as a gold in singles".
Stan: "Yes that was something really exceptional, unreal, again, for me it was also everything that went around it, being able to see all those great champions, in the opympic village"
Roger: "like taking pictures..."
Stan: "yes (laughters) with Seve it was the first (and only) time I asked an athlete for his autograph and it was Kobe Bryant, and Seve's cell phone was out of battery, so we had to run to quickly recharge it and make Kobe wait, but it went all fine, great memories. Everything that we lived there was really like a whole chapter in my career".
Roger picks another tennis ball.
Roger: "daddy. Yes, indeed daddy of four kids, oh well, lots to do at home"
Stan: "indeed, you look quite tired (laughters).
Roger: "yes, I am tired (laughters), that's the first thing you told me when you saw me today. No, that's truly an amazing dream for me, to interact with kids is always super and if that's yours that's something different. Really great emotions, it's unreal how they grow up fastly. But when you're tired you feel like everything goes very slowly..."
Stan: "Roger has four, I only have one daughter but the feelings are the same, the difference is that she doesn't always travel with me, that's funny to see how she grow up fast, when she comes back from school, she learns English words, lyrics..."
Roger: "she improves at tennis"
Stan: "no, no she doesn't play anymore..."
Roger: "ah ok, like mine..."
Stan picked a last tennis ball.
Stan: "CD, davis cup"
Roger: "no CD, it's music! (laughters)"
Journalist: "no, davis cup, it's soon, so how does it look like?"
Roger: "yeah, it's just around the corner, we are still preparing it, making small adjustments, that handy that we are both here in London, and Seve too. Since we won't play home, I think it will make us even more closer to each other, and I'm really looking forward to this very big challenge".
Stan: "Our chance in the Swiss team, is that we are a small team, we all know each other very well, like a real family, I am for now also very focused on the Masters but as soon lose here then it will be all focused for the tie and swithc to playing on clay"
Roger: "you won't lose here! Not much at least (both laughters), well we'll already win the RR matches, then we'll see (laughters)."
